HEAVY EQUIPMENT / DIESEL MECHANIC



Salary: 114 - $ 41,540.00 minimum salary


Purpose of Classification

Under the general supervision, responsible to perform technical work in repair and/or vehicle/equipment maintenance function. Duties include overhauling gasoline/diesel vehicles ranging from light to heavy road construction equipment and maintaining existing structures and grounds. Positions in this class perform routine maintenance and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; including welding electrical and light bodywork repairs; answering maintenance questions; and maintaining repair documents and records.


Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.


Repairs or overhauls truck brakes and clutches.


Repairs hydraulic and electrical systems on heavy road equipment and diesel vehicles.


Performs complex transmission and engine repairs of heavy equipment and diesel equipment.


Performs welding on bumper guards, racks and trailer hitches.


Replaces water and fuel pumps.


Performs on the road of disabled road equipment and vehicles.


Maintains accurate records of all repairs.


Checks the maintenance facility's equipment for proper working condition and if it is ready for the duties as intended; assists maintenance personnel with equipment problems and ensures timely completion of work; works with power tools in a safe manner.


Diagnoses issues with machinery and recommends repairs; forwards diagnosis and recommendations to the department head; advises subordinate mechanics on a course of action of repairs.


Performs oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks and other preventive maintenance on county machinery equipment; tows vehicles needing repair and determines problem and necessary solution.


Performs needed repair work on county equipment listed above using hoists, hand tools, gauges, drills, grinding wheels, testing devices, and such other tools and equipment as may be necessary; takes equipment or parts needing repair to another shop in the event they cannot be repaired in-house.


Operates testing equipment, troubleshoots and makes repairs. Tests drives vehicles and machinery after repair to ensure that they are in proper working condition; may perform minor repair on stalled vehicles or machinery in the field; may perform some welding, braising, and soldering chores.


Maintains tools and machinery in good condition and uses all tools carefully and as instructed; may be expected to operate heavy equipment.


Additional Functions

Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED; supplemented by four (4) years of experience performing technical and/or repair work as a mechanic in gasoline/diesel operated vehicles or heavy equipment; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience.; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must have a valid Texas Class A CDL license with Tank, Air Brakes.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


Knowledge of the different types of hydraulics, knowledge of the operation and purpose of different lubricants, knowledge of diesel engines and their operations, knowledge of the use of electronic testing equipment. Skill in the operation of hand and power tools, and welding equipment. Ability to drive different road equipment and diesel vehicles; ability to road test vehicles and diagnose malfunctions and vehicle operating systems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, County employees, auto part vendors, and the general public. May be required to work more than forty (40) hours during the workweek; required to be on call 24 hours a day. Provide your own hand tools.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium to high weight (25-75 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard or work station.


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Exposure to damp/wet surfaces, duty conditions, fumes and odors, flammable liquids and high noise levels.


This is a Civil Service covered position. Testing requirements will follow section 2.32 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations Handbook. Probationary period will follow section 2.35 of the Civil Service Rules and Regulations Handbook.
