Project Engineer (Energy Storage Development)

Camelot Energy Group
Boston, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 3/12/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 9/7/2026

Camelot Energy Group (Camelot) is on a mission to power a just and sustainable society with clean energy. We are hiring a Project Engineer who thrives in a technical and market consulting environment, helping clients solve a wide range of challenges as they invest in solar, energy storage, and other clean energy technologies and projects. As part of our Technical Services department, you will help guide project developers and other clients through electrical engineering, energy storage analysis, and other clean energy project development challenges.

About Us

Camelot, founded in 2022, is a new technical and strategic advisory firm supporting asset owners and investors in the clean energy space. Our clients build, own, and operate solar and energy storage projects, and we help them by providing technical due diligence, owner’s engineering, strategic advisory, and other bespoke support. Our core values of courage, empathy, integrity, and service are at the heart of our business and support our mission of accelerating the pace of clean energy adoption to build a just and sustainable society.

Camelot’s founder, Shawn Shaw, is a 20 year veteran of the solar and energy storage industry, with experience ranging from supporting state incentive programs to supporting some of the largest banks and financiers on their most challenging project finance transactions. Shawn has built, trained, and nurtured consulting teams throughout his career and founded Camelot to be a human-centric consultancy that values trust, flexibility, and mentorship. Shawn is supported by a robust team of industry leaders and mentors who all have 10 years of detailed experience in the clean energy sector, from development through construction and asset management. Our leadership team boasts a collective 30 GWh of energy storage experience with a wide range of technologies and markets prior to joining Camelot.

The Camelot team has over 130 years of combined experience in the clean energy sector and has made an outsized impact on the industry for a group of our size. We have directly supported over 30 GWh of energy storage projects (both standalone and hybrid), performed M&A due diligence on over 8 GW of assets, and have seen our Independent Engineering work accepted by several US-based financial institutions. More recently, we have also begun supporting some of the most impactful public agencies and programs in the clean energy space, and our owner’s engineering team has brought over 1.5GWh of energy storage projects online in just the past few months. Our team is led by highly seasoned staff with decades of experience, and we are excited to continue growing and look forward to both mentoring and learning from each new member of the team.

About the Position

The Energy Storage Development Engineer is a member of our Technical Services team who supports consulting engagements for developers, asset owners, investors, public programs, and similar entities. The role involves providing a bespoke consulting service to our clients and demonstrating experience in delivering projects, including (but not limited to):

·       Supporting project development technical decisions related to schedule, layout, technology selection, interconnection strategy, and permitting considerations

·       Preparing site layouts, single-line electrical diagrams, and project specifications, such as might be used to communicate design intent to permitting, interconnection, and land use stakeholders.

·       Performing commercial and utility-scale battery sizing and dispatch simulations.

·       Conducting revenue and financial analysis for solar and storage projects.

·       Leading and supporting grid interconnection applications, processes, and utility coordination.

·       Interfacing with project developers and vendors in an informed manner regarding relevant policies, regulations, and major industry trends

·       Performing technical due diligence on clean energy projects, including preparing independent engineering reports where required.

·       Collaborating with developers and internal teams to support project development.

·       Representing owners in oversight of project procurement, design, construction, and commissioning

·       Communicating technical findings clearly to clients and stakeholders.

·       Staying current with industry trends and contributing to internal knowledge sharing.

·       Supporting permitting efforts, such as preparing compliant submittals and querying relevant databases to obtain permitting information.

During a typical day, the Energy Storage Development Engineer will likely perform a mix of duties that might include online meetings, reviewing electrical designs, project documentation, preparing preliminary interconnection documents, assembling client presentations, analyzing energy storage project revenue streams, assessing sites for development risks, and (of course) being sure to take some time for rest, exercise, and non-work activities. The work can be fast-paced at times, but we proactively manage our clients, project intake, workload, and staff to create a positive working environment that leads to better results.

About You

We are seeking a team member to fill a role that blends organization and frequent client interaction with technical tasks such as analyzing project economics, design packages, technologies, and contracts. Recognizing that this is a broad skill set, we will be happy to provide the right candidate with training and support in filling gaps. However, we fundamentally seek a candidate with the following attributes:

Education: We are seeking a candidate with a 4-year degree in Electrical Engineering or a similar discipline from an accredited degree program or equivalent hands-on experience. Candidates holding a valid state license in the Northeastern United States are highly preferred.

Experience: A successful candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working in energy storage or clean energy consulting, project development, project finance, integration, applications engineering, asset management, or similar roles. Experience with hybrid solar projects is a nice-to-have. A mix of project development and engineering experience will be needed for success in this role.

Competencies: Given the varied nature of our projects and clients, we seek a candidate with the following competencies:

·       Proficiency in energy storage development tools (e.g., QGIS, Energy Toolbase, SAM, Tyba, Storlytics, Helioscope, and DER-VET).

·       Knowledge of project development activities, including origination, site control, interconnection, engineering stage-gates, hosting capacity analysis, permitting, and project financing.

·       Understanding of energy storage system costs, performance, and supply chain considerations;

·       Ability to accurately interpret technical ESS documents, such as specification sheets and drawings, etc.

·       Critical thinking and the ability to communicate ideas clearly in written and verbal formats;

·       Strong proficiency in the MS Office suite;

·       Knowledge of battery energy storage systems and solar PV technologies.

·       Familiarity with regional incentive programs such as NY VDER, MA SMART, and others is preferred. Must be able to research programs and their financial implications as the need arises.

·       Familiarity with NFPA, UL, IEC, and IEEE standards.

·       Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working remotely.

·       Professional Engineer (PE) license or EIT certification, and willingness to obtain PE license.

·       Experience with AutoCAD, PowerFactory, ETAP, or similar tools is desirable.

·       Expertise in advanced modeling and scripting via Python or similar software packages is also welcome.

·       Although not a requirement, familiarity with hybrid solar & storage system modeling using software such as SAM, PVsyst, Helioscope, SolarFarmer, or similar packages is a plus.

Inclinations: The role will involve remote work, and the majority of the tasks will be completed in an office setting, with some periodic need for fieldwork, travel for meetings or site visits (20-25% travel, varying by project phases), and similar activities. Comfort with working remotely, interacting over video conferencing platforms, and operating independently will be necessary. This role will also require flexibility in switching between tasks and priorities quickly. An ideal candidate will be inclined to suggest and implement new processes or services as opportunities arise.

Location: This position is open to those permanently residing in the U.S., with a preference for candidates located in the Northeast who hold a state license in that region. This allows for smooth teamwork with the current team and enables occasional travel to project sites in the United States and Canada when necessary. Otherwise work location is remote and completely flexible.

Sponsorship: Camelot values diversity, and we are open to sponsoring qualified individuals on a case-by-case basis.

Note: Even if you do not meet every single qualification, we encourage you to apply. We value potential and are committed to supporting your development. We are also glad to consider applicants who bring additional seniority and experience to the role. While this is not an executive-level position, we do support the growth of all our team members and would be glad to explore this role as part of a career projection for the right candidate.
