What are the responsibilities and job description for the Excel Tutoring: Lead Tutor position at Cambridge Public Schools?
Description of Service Opportunity:
The Excel Tutoring program launched during the 2023-2024 school year to provide additional, afterschool, academic support to students who need it most. Now, entering its third year, the Excel Tutoring program supports hundreds of students across our elementary and upper schools.
The Excel Tutoring program is an in-person, afterschool, high-impact tutoring program in the Cambridge Public Schools. Excel Tutoring uses intensive, relationship-based, and personalized instruction to accelerate learning for students who are performing two or more grade levels below expectations.
We offer two, 10-week sessions throughout the school year. Lead Tutors can work one or two sessions. Lead Tutors support educators at sites with high tutoring support needs. They will review data with tutors, help to monitor student progress, co-design intervention plans for students, and support caregiver communication. Lead Tutors set the tone at the tutoring site, and help to facilitate school-based professional learning for tutors.

-Session I: 10/6/25–12/19/25
-Staff professional learning week and preparation of 9/29
-Session II: 2/9/26–5/8/26
-Staff professional learning and preparation week of 2/2/26
-Schedule
-Tuesdays & Thursdays, from school dismissal—late bus
Lead Tutor responsibilities include:
-Co-designing and observing small group tutoring sessions in literacy or math
-Ensuring tutors are using research-based approaches to literacy or math support that are aligned with district approaches and priorities
-Collaborating with tutors to review student data, monitor academic progress, and plan tutoring sessions
-Building relationships with students during the tutoring program
-Sharing students progress with families and caregivers
-Attending and/or facilitating professional learning sessions as applicable
Please note that your hourly rate is depending upon your collective bargaining agreement or individual hourly rate.
Minimum Requirements:
-Licensure from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in one of the following areas: Elementary (1-6), Moderate Disabilities (preK-8, 5-12), Early Childhood (preK-2), English (5-12), English as a Second Language (preK-6, 5-12), Math (1-6, 5-8), or Reading Specialist (all levels) required.
-Experience providing academic support for students who are currently performing below grade level
-Priority will be given to regularly appointed literacy or math coaches from Cambridge Public School District
Length of Contract:
September 29, 2025 through December 19, 2025
Contract Amount
Not exceed $4020.00
Please note that your hourly rate is dependent upon your collective bargaining agreement or individual hourly rate. If you are a non-exempt employee and have worked more than 40 hours a week, you will be paid time and a half for any hours worked over 40 hours
