Job Title: Controller – Commercial Real Estate
Department: Accounting
Reports To: CFO
Location: Vienna, VA
Position Summary
The Controller oversees most accounting, financial reporting, and compliance functions for a commercial real estate portfolio. This role ensures accurate financial management of assets including office, retail, industrial, and mixed-use properties. The Controller leads the accounting team, manages audits, supports asset management, and partners with senior leadership to drive financial performance and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
· Ensure that all accounting transactions are recorded
· Participate in the strategic financial planning and corporate budgeting process
- Manage the cashflow of the parent company and related subsidiary companies
· Responsible for all corporate internal and external financial reporting – including lenders and partners
· Oversee the month/quarter/year-end general ledger close process which includes balance sheet reconciliations and income statement analysis (actual results compared to budget, trends, etc)
· Review the monthly and annual closing packages as prepared by the Property Accountants (MOR’s and Property Budgets)
· Provide financial information to CPA firm to assist in the completion and filing of annual tax returns
· Manage the external CPA review and audit process
· Develop and manage the internal audit function
· Develop policy and procedures for the accounting function (general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reporting)
· Supervise and review the work of accounting and lease administration team
· Ensure that Income and Expense reports are filed timely
· Ensure that annual CAM estimates and annual CAM reconciliations are performed and recorded timely and accurately
· Develop and maintain banking and other institutional relationships
Team Leadership
- Manage, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
- Implement accounting policies, procedures, and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Strategic Support
- Support acquisition due diligence, property dispositions, and financing transactions.
- Collaborate with senior management on financial planning and risk management.
- Provide insights into portfolio performance, ROI, and cash flow optimization.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred).
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in commercial real estate (office, retail, industrial, or mixed-use) required.
- Strong knowledge of property management accounting systems (e.g., Yardi and MRI).

- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
- High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Pay: $135,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
