Job Summary:
The Cambridge Center for Adult Education, located in Harvard Square, is currently seeking a part-time instructor to teach an 8 week “Crash Course in Astronomy” class for adults, beginning in our Summer 2026 term. This class is currently planned for 8 Mondays, 7:45-9:15pm. Begins Jul. 13. However, we can reschedule based on your availability.
Here is the existing class description but it can be adapted as needed: From exoplanets to exploding stars, and dark energy to the Big Bang, this course offers a front-row seat to the most fascinating phenomena in the universe. You'll learn how astronomers have decoded the secrets of the night sky and explore the mysteries we cannot yet explain. Topics include our solar system, the life cycle of stars, compact objects, galaxies, dark matter, cosmology, and how astronomical instruments work. Two sessions will be interactive stargazing nights with a portable telescope and binoculars.
The hourly rate begins at $25-$30 /hr, commensurate with experience. Instructors can also take one free class per term (up to $300).
Qualifications:
- Demonstrable experience and success in the science & nature sector.
- Experience as an educator/instructor.
- An ability to engage a diverse demographic of adult learners.
- A relevant degree, training, or experience in a science or nature related educational field is preferred.
