Position Summary
The Head Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing all aspects of the boys basketball program. This includes fostering student-athlete growth, promoting sportsmanship, ensuring academic accountability, and building a competitive and positive team culture aligned with school and district values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Plan, organize, and supervise all practices, games, and team activities
- Develop a comprehensive basketball program (grades 7–12 or as applicable)
- Establish team rules, expectations, and culture focused on discipline, respect, and effort
- Coordinate with feeder programs to ensure program continuity and development
Coaching & Player Development
- Teach fundamental and advanced basketball skills, strategies, and game concepts
- Provide individualized and team instruction to improve performance
- Promote strength, conditioning, and injury prevention practices
- Support multi-sport participation when appropriate
Game Management
- Prepare game plans and strategies
- Supervise and coach athletes during contests
- Ensure compliance with league, conference, and state athletic regulations
Student-Athlete Support
- Monitor and promote academic progress of players
- Model and teach good sportsmanship, leadership, and character
- Build positive relationships with student-athletes
Program Administration
- Maintain inventory, equipment, and uniforms
- Coordinate scheduling, transportation, and facility use
- Manage program budget in collaboration with the Athletic Director
- Ensure all eligibility, physicals, and paperwork are completed
Communication & Community Engagement
- Communicate effectively with players, parents, administration, and staff
- Promote the basketball program within the school and community
- Organize team meetings, parent meetings, and off-season opportunities
Staff Supervision
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches
- Provide leadership and direction to coaching staff
Qualifications
- Previous coaching experience preferred (head coaching experience desired)
- Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, and skill development
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and community
- Must meet all state and district coaching certification requirements
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
Work Environment
- Requires evening and weekend hours during the season
- Travel for away contests and tournaments
- Off-season responsibilities may include camps, open gyms, and program development
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Athletic Director and/or Principal based on program success, organization, communication, and adherence to school policies.
