People & Culture Coordinator
Calyx Containers | Salt Lake City, UT | Full-Time, On-Site | Reports to the President
Compensation is competitive and we share the full range in the first conversation.
About Calyx
Calyx Containers is a 10-year-old packaging innovation company primarily serving the cannabis industry from Salt Lake City. We design, manufacture, and source compliant packaging through a hybrid model that combines our own domestic digital manufacturing facility with an international partner sourcing network. This year we launched Calyx Command, our new digital quoting and ordering platform, and we are rebuilding how this company works from the inside out: more automation, more leverage per person, and bigger jobs for the people who grow with it. We want to be the employer top talent in Salt Lake talks about - and this role helps us build exactly that.
The Role
You will be the heartbeat of the employee experience at Calyx - the person who makes this an amazing place to work and makes sure everyone outside the building knows it. You will own our culture calendar, our employer brand, our candidate and new-hire experience, and the office itself, while running the day-to-day people operations that keep a 60-person company humming. You report directly to the President.
This is a high-potential role, not a caretaker role. Calyx is mid-transformation: we are adopting AI-enabled productivity in every department, and the people who lean in are getting more opportunity to grow their career, faster. Your mission is to make that transition visible, celebrated, and exciting - and to build a workplace and employer reputation strong enough to attract and keep the kind of people who thrive in it. Do this well and this role grows with you: the path from here leads to owning the entire People function.
What You Own
- Culture and team events. Plan and run the events, rituals, celebrations, and recognition programs that make people proud to work here - on a real budget, executed with real creativity.
- Employer brand. Make Calyx a magnet: careers page content, LinkedIn presence, milestone stories, and a candidate experience people mention in interviews elsewhere.
- The office itself. Own the space: supplies, snacks, vendors, and the ongoing buildout that turns our HQ into a place that impresses candidates and energizes the team.
- Recruiting coordination. Run the hiring engine: post roles, screen resumes, schedule interviews, keep candidates warm, and make every applicant feel respected, fast.
- Onboarding. Deliver a first week people tell their friends about - equipment ready, plan written, standards clear from day one.
- AI-productivity champion. Organize trainings, share wins, and spotlight the people leveling up with AI so the whole company sees the transition as the opportunity it is.
- People operations. Keep employee records, Gusto data, and the org chart clean and current; support benefits enrollment and answer day-to-day questions.
- Performance cadence. Run the calendar and tracking for reviews and check-ins so no conversation gets skipped and no paperwork goes missing.
- Offboarding logistics. Handle exits with respect and precision - equipment, access, exit interviews, and clean files.
Your First 90 Days
- Day 30: You know every employee by name, the office runs without anyone asking, and you have shipped your first team event people actually talked about.
- Day 60: Onboarding is rebuilt and documented, open roles have organized pipelines, and the careers page finally looks like the company we are.
- Day 90: The culture calendar is set for two quarters, the first AI-productivity spotlight series has run, and candidates are mentioning our reputation unprompted.
Who You Are
- An energy source. People feel the difference when you are in the building, and things you touch get more organized, not less.
- A natural host and planner. You have run events, programs, or projects people remember, and you sweat the details that make them land.
- AI-native. You already use tools like Claude or ChatGPT daily and instinctively reach for them first. You are excited to help others do the same.
- Discreet beyond your years. People will trust you with sensitive things. You keep confidences, follow process, and never trade in gossip.
- A proud promoter. You genuinely enjoy telling a company's story and making it look as good outside as it feels inside.
- Comfortable everywhere. Our team spans machine operators, designers, salespeople, and software engineers - you are credible and warm with all of them.
- Hungry to grow. You want the People function to be your career, and you see a role like this as the fastest way to earn it.
Requirements
- 1-3 years of experience in people operations, recruiting coordination, office management, events, hospitality, or a similar role where organization and people skills were the job.
- Demonstrated daily fluency with AI tools, or a portfolio of things you have built, written, or organized with them.
- Strong writing - you will produce job posts, announcements, and employer-brand content weekly.
- Experience with Gusto or any HRIS is a plus. So is having planned events on a budget.
- A degree is not required. Judgment, energy, and follow-through are.
How This Role Is Scoped
This role is our people, culture, and workplace champion. Payroll execution lives with our finance team. Compensation decisions, org design, and sensitive employee-relations matters are owned by the President, supported by certified HR experts on call - your job on hard topics is to listen well and route fast, never to carry them alone. The scope is designed so a rising People professional can fully own it, be visibly excellent at it, and grow into more.
Why This Role, Why Now
Calyx just turned ten, and the next chapter is being written right now: a new technology platform, a scaling manufacturing operation, and a company deliberately reinventing how work gets done. You will build the culture, the reputation, and the workplace of that next chapter, with a direct line to the President and room to grow as fast as you can earn it.
To apply, send your resume to alex@calyxcontainers.com with the subject line "People & Culture." No cover letter - instead, include three sentences on the best event, program, or experience you have ever organized. We started as a stuff animal bong bag company and now have 18 patents - so we love out-of-the-box ideas. We respond to every qualified applicant within one week.
