POSITION:
HEAD START EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION TEACHER


LOCATION: To Be Determined

As assigned by the Program Coordinator Program or classroom location may change to meet the needs of the program.


POSITION SUMMARY
: Under direction of the school principal and Head Start Coordinator plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. To ensure student success, provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes. Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

: School Principal and Head Start Coordinator


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:

  • A Maryland Professional Eligibility Certificate, Standard Professional Certificate or Advanced Professional Certificate in the appropriate field of education; or
  • A Maryland Conditional Degree Certificate as outlined in the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) or
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE); or
  • A baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to ECE, with experience teaching preschool-age children; or
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.


KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  • Creates a classroom environment that makes space for student voice, student agency, and is intellectually and socially safe for learning.
  • Develops classroom routines and rituals to support a culture of learning and utilizes a balance of proactive evidenced based strategies to manage conflict and redirect negative behavior.
  • Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Plans and prepares lessons individually and collaboratively aligned with Calvert County curricula that outlines clear learning goals, assignments, and instructional materials.
  • Perform the functions of this position with a strong understanding of the Head Start Performance Standards and the component plans; and thorough knowledge and application of Developmentally Appropriate Practices;
  • Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including weekly observations in each area, examples of the child's work, and a developmental assessment, completed as per designated procedure;
  • Incorporate research-based strategies, evidence-based practices, and instructional technology within the learning process.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials aligned to Calvert County curricula that meets the needs of every student regardless of their background, ability, or social-economic status.
  • Organizes and leads activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Monitors and evaluates student progress and outcomes using feedback and appropriate formative and summative assessment techniques.
  • Prepares, administers, and corrects evaluations and assessments, and records results.
  • Improves skill and knowledge base in current trends, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, cultural responsiveness, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Confers with parents and students regarding academic, social-emotional, and behavioral progress of assigned students; arranges and participates in home visits, teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary.
  • Attends and actively participates in Head Start and CCPS staff/faculty meetings and professional learning sessions. Attends board and parent meetings as requested;
  • Assist in conducting the daily health and environment checklist and meet monthly with appropriate staff to discuss health needs of children;
  • Complete and submit required forms and records in a timely and accurate fashion; e.g., lesson plans, time sheets, meal reports, etc.;
  • Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
  • Teaches summer school
  • Serves on special committees.
  • Attends special events such as open house and registration nights.
  • Thinks, concentrates, and interacts positively with others.
  • Works flexible hours as necessary.
  • Works under stress and meets all deadlines.
  • Maintains regular, on-time attendance.


OTHER DUTIES
: Performs related work as required or assigned by the school principal or designee.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.


UNUSUAL DEMANDS
: May be subject to a flexible work schedule.


FLSA STATUS
: Exempt


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
: Eleven (11) month position (208 days); $38.67/hour; employment is contingent upon continued grant funding and need; grant employees are At-Will employed. Site location is flexible and will be based on the needs of the program. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.


EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools and Head Start


EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION
: 2026-2027 school year

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.


State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
