SUMMARY STATEMENT

CDS recognizes and affirms the ministry of teaching as a God-ordained vocation. Although teachers may not be “officially ordained” by a commonly known or recognized religious order, they are  essential and full-time ministers of the Christian faith, the CDS Statement of Faith, and the educational philosophy and objectives of Calvary Day School to students, faculty, and co-workers. This document provides a framework of qualifications, duties, and responsibilities to assure the orderly operation of an exemplary program at Calvary Day School. The teacher will prayerfully help students learn attitudes, skills, and subject matter that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible Christian men and women to the praise and glory of God.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES

Spiritual - The teacher shall:

  • seek to be a role model in attitude, speech and actions with a consistent daily walk with Jesus Christ.
  • show by example the importance of Scripture study, prayer, witnessing, and unity in Christian fellowship.
  • follow the Matthew 18 principle in dealing with students, parents, staff, and administration.
  • motivate students to accept God's gift of salvation and grow in their faith.
  • lead students to a realization of their self-worth in Christ.

Educational–The teacher shall:

  • integrate Biblical principles and the Christian philosophy of education throughout the curriculum.
  • plan and execute the use  of material and activities, according to the particular grade level curriculum.
  • maintain short and long-term plans throughout each semester and keep a record of them in Curriculum Trak.
  • strive to keep communications open with parents, keeping parents informed about the child's progress as well as the classroom's co-curricular activities.
  • Be responsible for discipline, orderliness, scheduling in the classroom, lunchroom, halls, bathrooms, and playground activities.
  • meet periodically with the principal, assistant principal(s) and other teachers to discuss problems and make plans for the enrichment of the basic program.
  •  present a positive attitude toward the parents, the school, and fellow teachers.
  • begin work according to the approved school calendar in advance of the opening of school and is expected to work after the close of school in the spring semester according to the approved school calendar.
  • cooperate with the administration in implementing policies, procedures, and directives governing the operation of the school.
  • support all policies of Calvary Day School. Should a question related to school policy arise, the teacher should notify the divisional principal. 
  • endeavor to broaden the knowledge in the educational field by attending workshops and taking advantage of other opportunities to increase the teacher's effectiveness in the classroom.
  • endeavor to maintain a Godly life in public and private, thereby providing a Christian role model for children and parents.
  • be assigned additional duties to support the functioning of the school.

Specific Responsibilities–The teacher shall:

  • arrive at school prior to the arrival of students and remain on duty during the hours assigned by the Principal or Head of School.. (Part-time teachers must adhere to their specified hours as agreed with the principal which may include attending meetings or events outside of the normal school day.)
  • maintain an accurate record of daily attendance, lunch count, and other appropriate activities.
  • keep receipts for money spent and give these to the appropriate administrative assistant for reimbursement when pre-approved by the principal.
  • write and submit lesson plans to the principal as directed by him/her.
  • take inventory of supplies periodically, determine needed items in advance, and then give the list to the appropriate administrative assistant for purchasing.
  • record current grades in a timely manner.
  • use homework effectively for drill, review, enrichment or project work.
  • keep students, parents, and the administration adequately informed of progress or deficiencies and give sufficient notice of failure of students under supervision. 
  • maintain a neat, orderly classroom so that the students will learn to care for and respect personal and school property.
  • meet periodically with the principal and other teachers to plan field trips and other enrichment activities. 
  • follow the directions given during orientation for securing a substitute and informing the divisional administrative assistant.
  • assist the students as they arrive and are picked up after school.
  • maintain a neat personal appearance, thereby setting a good example for the students and parents.
  • refrain from gossiping about students, parents, fellow teachers, and will apply biblical principles in solving problems in these areas.
  • protect individual rights of students and be sensitive to individual needs.  The teacher is in a position to receive confidential information and must handle that information responsibly and confidentially.
  • attend overnight retreat(s) held at a local camp depending upon the assignment by the Upper School principal. (Upper School teachers only)
  • shall report suspected abuse to the North Carolina's child protection agency or the police in the county where the juvenile resides, if for any reason he/she has reason to suspect that a child is abused, neglected, or died as the result of maltreatment
