Metropolitan State Hospital is located in Norwalk, Los Angeles County.
The Department of State Hospitals – Metropolitan, Plant Operations Department, is accepting applications for the Chief of Plant Operations, Permanent/ Full Time position.
Under the direction of the Chief of Plant Operations III, the Chief of Plant Operations I (CPOI) is responsible for a variety of activities in conjunction with the Capital Outlay Program (COBCP) and Special Repairs (SR).
Responsible for the maintenance and plant operations at a State Hospital. Plan and supervise the operation, maintenance, and repair of the plumbing, heating, lighting, intercommunicating, water treatment, sewage disposal, air conditioning, ventilating and refrigerating systems and auxiliary equipment, including high-pressure steam boiler units, gas and oil furnaces, transformers, chlorinators, pumps, compressors, condensers, steam lines, water lines, gas lines, steam traps, meters, recorders, and electronic and fire alarm systems.
The candidate should have the ability to act independently, remain flexible, and reason logically, creatively and utilize a variety of analytical techniques to resolve the more complex problems; work effectively in an often stressful and high-paced environment, while managing a heavy workload. The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills; good research skills; effective time management and organizational skills, communicate effectively and demonstrate good judgment when interacting with the public and administrative personnel; have the ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines; and maintain strict confidentiality.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Supervisory and leadership experience; ability to interpret laws (California Building Codes, Public Contract Code, California Code of Regulations, Title 22, DIR Labor Code, etc.); knowledge of Department of State Hospitals & hospital wide policies.

Experience: Either:
- One year of experience performing the duties of a Chief Engineer I or Supervisor of Building Trades in the California state service; or
- Two years performing the duties of a trades supervisor in the California state service; or
- Two years of experience in charge of plant maintenance in a plant or facility with a population of at least 750 residents and employees and employing a maintenance crew of at least 25 persons, including both stationary engineers and building tradespeople; or
- Three years of experience in the supervision of a maintenance crew including several crafts in a plant or facility of at least 750 residents and employees.
