Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, and highly motivated Telescope Assembly Technician to join the Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy Division (PMA) in support of the reassembly and refurbishment of the Leighton Telescope. The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills in a hands-on, field-based environment.
This role is responsible for executing mechanical assembly, subsystem integration, and general fabrication work in accordance with engineering specifications. The position requires the ability to interpret technical documentation, follow complex procedures, and contribute to the resolution of technical challenges that arise during assembly. The successful candidate must be capable of maintaining accuracy and consistency in documentation while performing physically demanding work in a remote, high-altitude setting.
The role requires someone who works effectively as part of a team, communicates clearly with engineers, project staff, and local collaborators, and is able to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail and a strong commitment to safety and quality. Interaction will include coordination with Chile-based staff, contractors, and vendors, as well as periodic collaboration with project personnel in Pasadena.
This full-time assignment requires a high level of independent judgment, adaptability, and accountability, along with the ability to understand both the broader project objectives and the detailed execution required to meet them.
Essential Job Duties
$34.00 - $50.75 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

Essential Job Duties
- Perform mechanical assembly and subsystem integration
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Document assembly procedures and results
- General shop work including cleaning, painting, metalworking, and woodworking
- Support rigging and crane operations
- Identify and report defects
- Maintain safe and clean work environment
- Operate telehandler and manlift
- Experience in mechanical assembly or fabrication
- Ability to read engineering drawings
- Strong attention to detail
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience with large instruments or telescopes
- Experience in remote environments
- Spanish language proficiency
- Ability to lift up to 16 kg (35 lb)
- Ability to climb ladders and work at height
- Physical strength and dexterity required for mechanical assembly work
- Outdoor workyard environment
- Initial assembly site at approximately 2900 m (9500 ft) altitude
- Deployment site at approximately 5115 m (16800 ft) altitude
- Work conducted in a remote location (San Pedro de Atacama, Chile)
- Successful completion of a post-offer high-altitude medical examination
- Ability to work in a remote international location for extended periods
- Compliance with all visa and international assignment requirements
- Adherence to all institutional and site-specific safety policies
- Ability to work flexible schedules as required by project timelines
- This position is required to live in housing designated by Caltech, Lodging is provided for the convenience of Caltech.
