What are the responsibilities and job description for the Investment Officer II – Collaborative Strategies position at CalSTRS?
The CalSTRS Investments Branch is seeking an experienced individual to work as an Investment Officer II on the Collaborative Strategies team.
Under the general direction of the Associate Portfolio Manager (APM), the Investment Officer II performs journey-level investment analysis and provides portfolio support for the Collaborative Strategies division, primarily in the private markets, consistent with CalSTRS policies, procedures, and investment objectives.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
• Demonstrated experience in investment analysis, particularly within private markets such as Private Credit and Private Equity.
• Proven ability to support the sourcing, underwriting, and execution of fund and co-investment opportunities with emphasis on large or cross-asset-class transactions.
• Advanced skills in financial modeling, return and risk analysis, and qualitative assessment of investment opportunities.
• Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to partner effectively with internal teams (Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Estate, Infrastructure) and external managers.
• Experience preparing investment review materials and participating in Investment Review Committee meetings, including presenting recommendations and documenting outcomes.
• Ability to manage day-to-day operational duties and serve as a liaison between investment groups and operations teams, including account setup and reconciliation.
• Proficiency in tracking commitment pacing budgets, reconciling commitments and capital account statements, and reviewing third-party fee validation outputs for compliance.
• Experience in ongoing monitoring, reporting, and analysis of fund and strategy relationships, including producing exposure, performance, and risk analyses using portfolio analytics software
• Experience contributing to manager ratings and watchlist recommendations, and attending LPAC meetings, annual general meetings, and on-site manager visits.
• Ability to support ad-hoc research, data collection, and special projects, including preparing briefings and reports for senior leadership on portfolio risks, market developments, or sector-level themes.
This position is eligible for incentive compensation and has a maximum incentive opportunity of 10% of base salary.
An incumbent who possesses a professional certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.
Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
