General Purpose of Job:
Perform a skilled level of work in the machining, fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and repair of a variety of metal parts, tools, and equipment. The machinist sets up and operates a variety of machine tools. The machinist also fits and assembles parts to make or repair machine tools and maintains industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The Machinist must employ a high degree of accuracy and precision in performing work according to instructions and specifications.
Programming, setup and operation of CNC machine tools to manufacture high precision machined components, tools and fixtures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Setup and Operate CNC Machine Tools (i.e., Mori-Seiki NL2500 & DMG-Mori NLX3000 lathes) and other general machine shop equipment.
- Perform set ups per procedures.
- Run machines per operation sheets to efficiently manage operation.
- Confer with supervisor to exchange technical information.
- Troubleshoot work in process on machine when program, speed, tolerance or finish problems occur.
- Read and interpret blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine holding requirements, setup procedures, control settings and machining methods and sequences.
- Calculate and set machine controls to position cutting tools in relation to work piece and to regulate factors, such as depth of cut, speed, and feed and coolant flow.
- Inspects and measures parts as required.
- Designs fixtures and tools as needed in order to fabricate parts.
- Perform routine machine maintenance. Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
Education, Skills, and Experience:
- 5 years’ experience, completion of a recognized CNC Programming/Machinist apprenticeship program or equivalent combination of experience and education
- Knowledge of “on machine” programming a plus.
- Ability to inspect parts using conventional inspection equipment (i.e., calipers, micrometers, height gage, comparator, dial indicators, etc.)
- Must be highly detail oriented.
- Able to perform routine maintenance (i.e., check & add fluids, replace coolant, replace filters, etc.)
- Able to work in a high mix low volume shop environment. Be agile.
