What are the responsibilities and job description for the Interior Designer (Mid-Senior Level) position at Calla Cane?
Calla Cane is a design studio where interior architecture, design, and product are consciously intertwined to create intuitive, meaningful spaces. We partner with homeowners, architects, and builders to deliver full-scale interiors—from custom millwork and cabinetry to furnishings, finishes, and art.
We also operate a lifestyle shop in Rowayton, CT, offering a curated selection of decor and artisan goods that reflect our design sensibility and bring product directly into the home.
As part of our team, you’ll help bridge conceptual thinking with hands-on execution, ensuring design integrity from initial vision through installation.
We are entering an exciting period of growth and are looking for team members who want to grow with us. Our goal is to take the studio to the next level—expanding both creatively and operationally to provide greater opportunity within the company. We are seeking driven individuals who want to be part of that journey and contribute to building something meaningful together.
This role requires a Type A personality—someone who is obsessed with design, deeply detail-oriented, and takes immense pride in their work.
As a Mid-to-Senior Interior Designer at Calla Cane, you will lead or co-lead key residential projects, contributing both creatively and technically. You’ll take ownership of design phases (concept through installation), collaborate with clients, architects, contractors, and art/design vendors, and guide more junior designers. You will also help maintain and elevate our studio’s aesthetic and process standards.
- Lead design development and documentation phases (schematic design, design development, construction documentation) for interior projects
- Produce space plans, elevations, millwork/cabinetry drawings, details, finishes boards, lighting and furnishing layouts
- Oversee and present conceptual design materials (mood boards, 3D renders, sketches) to clients and the principal
- Collaborate with architects, contractors, engineers, and trade partners to integrate interior scope into the broader build
- Specify furniture, lighting, fabrics, materials, art, and accessories, and manage procurement and logistics
- Oversee and troubleshoot site execution, field issues, and design intent during installation
- Mentor and support more junior staff (e.g., Junior/Intermediate Designers)
- Participate in studio-level strategy, design research, and process improvement
- Occasionally support shop operations (merchandising, client visits, product sourcing) and trade partnerships, when relevant
- 5 years of interior design experience (residential and/or high-end interiors)
- Strong design vision and aesthetic sensitivity; ability to develop compelling concepts
- Proven ability in construction documentation, millwork detailing, and technical coordination
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit or SketchUp (or comparable), Adobe Creative Suite, and 3D rendering tools
- Strong project management skills: scheduling, budgeting, coordination with multiple disciplines
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Knowledge of procurement, product sourcing channels, logistics, and installations
- Leadership and mentoring experience (or desire to develop that)
- Exceptionally detail-oriented, organized, and proactive problem-solver
- Collaborative spirit, flexibility, and willingness to roll up sleeves in a small, design-forward studio
- Experience with high-end residential projects
- Familiarity with interior architecture and bespoke millwork
- Understanding of sustainable and artisanal materials and craftsmanship
- Previous experience in a design product retail studio
- Local or regional knowledge of the CT / NY design and trade ecosystem
- A leadership role in shaping and executing sophisticated interiors
- Opportunity to grow within the company as the studio expands
- Exposure to the full spectrum of design, architecture, product, and installation
- A creative, collaborative, design-driven culture
- Competitive compensation (based on experience)
- Occasional engagement with shop operations, product development, and trade relationships
- Travel opportunities as part of project work and sourcing trips
- Work in a beautiful, independent, and friendly environment
- Experience with every stage of a project—from conceptual meetings to final photoshoots
- A team-oriented working environment where collaboration is valued
- Friendly and engaged clients who appreciate thoughtful design
