Position Purpose

Under the general direction of the Chair of Medical Education, the faculty member is responsible for teaching, research, and research support activities that advance the institution's educational and scholarly missions. California University of Science and Medicine School of Medicine (CUSM-SOM) offers educational programs, including the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and the Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program and supports research initiatives through centers such as the Center for Brain and Behavioral Health.


The faculty member will provide instruction in statistical theory, biostatistics, bioinformatics, and research methods, including study design, data analysis, interpretation of quantitative findings, and scientific reporting. Areas of application include observational studies, clinical trials, computational and quantitative analysis, medical and public health research, and related disciplines. Teaching responsibilities include coursework within the MD and MBS programs, facilitation of scholarly programs and activities, delivery of co-curricular workshops, and faculty development programs. The faculty member fosters students' ability to apply quantitative methods and communicate effectively with researchers and healthcare professionals across disciplines.


In addition to teaching responsibilities, the faculty member provides direct statistical and data analysis support through the Office of Medical Education data analysis Lab, collaborating with students, faculty, research staff, and clinical partners to support qualitative and quantitative data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of research and scholarly work.


The faculty member also engages in independent and collaborative research activities aligned with CUSM's strategic priorities, contributing to the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge that advances healthcare education and outcomes.


Essential Function
s

50% Teaching

  • Teach MD and MBS students about the principles of biostatistics, research methods, tools, data mining and collection, data analysis, research methodology, and preparation of research results in various courses in the respective curricula.
  • Contribute to curricular assessment tools.
  • Facilitate co-curricular programs in biostatistics, data analysis, or related fields.
  • Provide training and instruction to faculty members and clinical partners on basic statistical principles, procedures, data collection/management, preparing research results, and software training.
  • Create and administer biostatistics and/or data analysis of skill-building sessions, workshops, and programmatic modules targeting CUSM students, faculty, and clinical partners.
  • Learn and teach the use of AI in research, research methods, analysis, and dissemination
  • Other duties as assigned


30% Research Support

  • Support data analysis programming and services, such as providing direct statistical or data analysis support to students, staff and faculty.
  • Contribute to studies using advanced statistical methods to answer questions of public health using a mixture of institutional clinical data and large nationwide datasets.
  • Generate and interpret statistical outputs through presentations, reports, figures, and tables.
  • Provide support for faculty research needs and assist faculty in quantitative and/or qualitative research projects related to community, basic science, and clinical disciplines.
  • Build and support collaborative relationships with individuals in different disciplines and serve as a statistics expert for research teams, internal and external committees, and collaborators.
  • Collaborate with faculty and students on the statistical methods and analysis for their research activities, addressing strategies and methods to generate research questions and build scientific hypotheses from research data sets.
  • Appropriately use AI in research support activities.


10% Research

  • Conduct and participate in research
  • Collaborate as a researcher in preparation of reports, protocols, scientific abstracts, peer-reviewed manuscripts, grant proposals, and responses to requests from regulatory agencies, CUSM Institutional Review Board, and grant reports to funding agencies when applicable.


10% Administrative

  • Serve on committees, mentor, advise students, and oversee student research activities
  • Other duties as assigned


Required Educational Qualifications

Terminal Degree (doctorate only) in Biostatistics and/or Epidemiology or related field with a minimum of two (2) years of experience directly related to the application of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and data analysis to Basic Science and/or Medicine within an academic or research institution.

  • Ability to apply a range of advanced statistical techniques in support of scientific research studies and/or experiments.
  • Ability to collect, manage, and process computer data and to format and generate reports.
  • Ability to consult with scientific investigators, interpret research requirements, and determine statistical analysis strategies.
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from complex statistical information.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to design, analyze, and report on research projects.
  • Ability to plan, create, program, and manage complex statistical databases.
  • Knowledge of scientific approach and methodologies.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles, concepts, methods, and standards of statistical research.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health epidemiology and measures of risk pertinent to community health.
  • Documentation of relevant scholarly and research activity.
  • Knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of probability and medical statistics theory.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in advanced statistical analysis for scientific application.
  • Knowledge of scientific reporting and manuscript preparation requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of data management principles and regulatory requirements for clinical trials and medical research.
  • Strong analytical communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expertise in statistical software such as SPSS, R, SAS, Stata, or other statistical software programs.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize projects.
  • Familiarity with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).


Preferred Qualifications

PhD in Biostatistics and/or Epidemiology or related field. Prior teaching experience at a medical school.
