Job Summary
The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher is responsible for a year’s course of study/program for visually impaired school students at the School for the Blind, emphasizing physical fitness, nutrition, community-based activities, and the expanded core curriculum. Provides direct instruction for students on campus and in community-based settings. Works as part of a team for assessments for placement and Triennial assessments; writes IEP goals. Collaborates effectively with educational teams (e.g. classroom teachers, Orientation & Mobility specialists, School Psychologists, etc.) to develop, implement and monitor student programming and progress. Prepares lesson plans, reports, and maintains records of student progress. Implements teaching strategies and behavior management techniques to ensure maximum student participation and progress. Communicates with parent(s)/ guardian(s) to report student progress. Constructs an optimal learning environment. *This position is pre-tenured, based on the bargaining unit contract between the State of California and the Service Employee's International Union (SEIU) - Local 1000, Bargaining Unit 3.
Requirements / Qualifications
Applicant must possess the following: Minimum Qualifications: o Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) o Possession of valid California Teaching Credential with a valid California Adapted Physical Education Specialist Authorization o Successfully passing the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) Desired Qualifications o Major or minor in Physical Education o Possession of a Cross-cultural, Language, and Academic Development (CLAD-EL) Authorization o Experience working with students with visual impairments, sensory impairments and/or multiple disabilities. o Commitment to the belief that the students can learn, and that maximizing student independence is the ultimate desired outcome. o Ability to individualize instruction to meet each student's unique needs and abilities o Experience conducting assessments o Excellent interpersonal skills, written communication skills, oral communication skills o Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members as well as with a wide range of stakeholders, including parents, school district personnel, and community members o Proactive self-starter with the ability to establish and rearrange priorities, and maintain focus on both short-term and long-term goals o Valid Driver’s License Please refer to Duty Statement for further information related to job expectations.
*This position will be considered pre-tenure until tenure is obtained. Tenure is acquired by meeting all of the requirements specified in the State of California and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) - Local 1000 Bargaining Unit 3 contact. Per the SEIU Local 1000 Bargaining Unit 3, section 22.6.3 Tenure – Special Schools (Unit 3), subsection B, Acquisition of Tenure, tenure is acquired by meeting all of the requirements specified in any one of the following subsections: 1. Full-time service as a pre-tenured employee at one special school in one or more classes of employees for three (3) successive school terms or fiscal year, as applicable; and commencement of service upon reappointment for full-time service at that school for the next school term or fiscal year, as applicable. The tenure is in that school. For additional subsections, please refer to the Bargaining Unit 3 contract. **Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 3, and related Excluded, Exempt and Statutory Exempt employees, will have their base salary reduced by 3 percent and will receive 3.75 hours PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions as full-time employees, on a prorated basis equivalent to their time-base. Permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same condition as full-time employees, based on the number of hours worked in the pay period.
