TECHNICAL MANAGER (Structural Engineer)
Opportunity:
The California Masonry Council (CMC) is seeking a structural engineer, civil engineer or technical architect to become our lead for CMC’s technical department as its “Technical Manager” to support the design and construction communities. The ideal candidate for this position will be a collaborative professional, relationship builder, an enthusiastic, self-driven and engaging presenter, and an influential communicator.
Who We Are:
The California Masonry Council, a non-profit, funded by California masonry contractors that supports the advancement and growth of masonry construction through education programs, publications, technical support and trade advocacy. We work in concert with the AEC community to promote the use of masonry and its beneficial characteristics such as economy, aesthetics and architectural features, fire & projectile resistance, durability and sustainability.
CMC is the fastest growing masonry organization in California, created as a division of MIA (EST. 1957), CMC is the new face of the masonry trade in CA.
Primary Responsibilities:
The Technical Manager will be responsible to create, curate, and promote technical content for publications, participate in developing/updating masonry building codes both State and National levels, engage, educate, respond and support the (AEC) design and construction communities on the use and technical aspects of masonry systems and material specifications for both concrete block and brick.
Job Description:
Foster collaborative relationships with industry associations, peers, material producers, contractors, and other related organizations to maximize collective exposure of masonry technical and building codes. Collaborate closely and become a trusted and creditable resource for AEC firms and organizations like AIA, CMAA, DBIA, and Structural Engineering orgs.
Respond to technical inquiries from the design and construction community. Partner with local associations and contactors to provide timely assistance at an appropriate level. Coordinate with regional experts, manufacturers, and peers to assist AEC in concept proposals, cost and timing schedules, code compliance, and/or specification reviews.
Coordinate with CMC and deliver presentations and seminars to educate architects and engineers about masonry design, benefits, and applications. Coordinate experts for content creation, educational programs, and publications.
Actively participate in relevant industry events with CMC by representing the organization at trade shows, ensuring a strong and professional presence. Contribute to the industry by collaborating with other like associations on code and technical updates.
Stay abreast of industry trends, codes, standards, and best practices related to masonry design, materials, and construction. Provide technical guidance and support to internal teams and external clients.
Through networking, nurture and grow existing networks of technical experts, with the objective of serving and assisting the AEC community.
Build strategic alliances by participating in local, regional, and/or state-level strategy sessions with key stakeholders and organizations to align efforts with regional objectives that will positively impact California’s masonry industry.

- Ability to periodically travel as needed. Expected travel for this position is 30-40%.
Background, Experience, and other Qualifications to be Considered:
- 3 to 5 years’ experience working for recognized design or construction firms.
- Experience of working with Concrete Block (CMU) and Brick.
- Proven experience of working with California Building Codes & Standards.
- General knowledge of TMS, and ASTM material specifications desired.
- Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field with a strong technical background. Master’s degree with emphasis in structural engineering a plus.
- Knowledge of masonry materials, seismic design principles, fire rating standards desired.
- Sustainability features (LEED), and energy code compliance a plus.
- Experienced working with recognized AEC firms on collaborative projects with multidisciplinary teams.
- General knowledge of Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build a plus.
Compensation and Other Information:
- Salary includes a base compensation of $120,000 -$145,000 per year.
- Full health and dental benefits, partial 401k match.
- Applicant’s geographic location can be anywhere within California, with a high preference for a major metropolitan area as Los Angeles, Orange County, Sacramento, San Francisco, Silicon Valley or San Diego. With offices in Southern California, periodic and special-called face-to-face mtgs will be required. CMC is open to remote work from any location in CA with excellent connectivity.
