The Business Taxes Specialist III (BTS III) in our Tax Policy Bureau (TPB) is responsible for:
- Serving as the highest-level technical specialist and advisor to the TPB Chief.
- Developing program plans, practices, and policies; providing consultations and presentations to executive, program, and legal management on the most complex audit and compliance policies and procedures.
- Preparing or coordinating the preparation of reports on a variety of technical, fiscal, or executive management requested subjects.
- Independently preparing responses and reviewing all TPB responses related to budgetary hearings, legislature, and other control agencies' inquiries.
- Conducting independent, in-depth research on technical tax applications; consulting with legal counsel to resolve complex and unique legal issues; preparing recommendations of proposed action to the TPB Chief.
Under Government Code 14200, this position may be eligible for partial telework for eligible candidates residing in California. All telework/hybrid schedules require staff to report to the office a minimum number of days per week. Schedules are subject to change.
Currently, per the California Budget Act of 2025, all California Department of Tax and Fee Administration salaries are subject to the provisions of the State of California’s Personal Leave Program.

In Addition To Meeting The Minimum Qualifications For The Business Taxes Specialist III, Competition Is Limited To Individuals Who Meet At Least One Of The Following Promotional Examination Criteria:
- Have a permanent civil service appointment with CDTFA, or
- Are current or former employees of the legislature for 2 or more years as defined in Government Code 18990, or
- Are current or former non-elected exempt employees of the executive branch for 2 or more consecutive years as defined in Govt. Code 18992, or
- Are persons retired from the United States military honorably discharged from active duty with a service disability or honorably discharged from active duty as defined in Government Code 18991. Applicants must provide a copy of discharge papers (DD 214) for verification purposes at the time of application.
