Job Description And Duties

The California Department of Justice is responsible for protecting and serving the People and interests of California. Among other things, we represent the People of California in civil and criminal matters before trial courts, intermediate appellate courts, and Supreme Courts of California and the United States, and serve as legal counsel to state officers, and most state agencies.

The Healthcare Rights and Access Section serves as the lead in proactive healthcare work, representing the Attorney General in his independent capacity and coordinating this work with others in the Department of Justice, including the Solicitor General’s Office, and other legal sections in the Public Rights and Civil Law Divisions. The Attorney General’s Healthcare Rights and Access Section has comprehensive authority to work on any matters, including investigations, litigation, and legislation, that will increase and protect the affordability, accessibility, and quality of healthcare in the State of California. The Section is responsible for overseeing and leading all work in the areas of consumer healthcare rights, including healthcare competition and prescription drug marketing, nonprofit healthcare transactions, violations of antitrust laws in the healthcare context, healthcare privacy and civil rights, and reproductive and LGBTQ healthcare-related rights. The Healthcare Rights and Access Section is monitoring and defending against efforts that undermine the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid, Women’s and LGBTQ health rights; reviewing nonprofit healthcare transactions; enforcing unfair competition and false advertisement laws against companies, providers, and individuals who are defrauding Californians; enforcing anti- competition laws to curb high drug pricing; and public health work on tobacco, e-cigarettes, and other products.

Under the general supervision of the Senior Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Assistant Attorney General, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, and the Attorney General, the Deputy Attorney General Supervisor directs and monitors the work of a team of Deputy Attorneys General and non-attorney legal professionals; personally performs and supervises complex legal work including investigations, trials, appeals, regulatory and legislative matters; evaluates team members' performance; provides training and mentoring to team and section members; handles general administrative matters; and participates in the interview and selection process for team and section members. This position will focus on overseeing the work of the Reproductive Justice Unit.
