Job Summary:
Calico Cottage is actively searching for a talented and driven Controller to become an integral part of their outstanding team. The Controller will assume a pivotal role in conducting diverse financial analysis and furnishing essential data to facilitate informed business decisions, working closely with the CFO. This individual will serve as a valuable resource and consultant for all departments, ensuring accurate transaction recording, effective cost management, and optimal ERP functionality. The primary objective of this position is to enhance profitability while establishing strong internal controls to mitigate the risk of fraudulent activities.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Ensure compliance with accounting principles and regulatory requirements. Review monthly outside sales commission calculations. Provide backup support for Accounts Payable functions when needed, such as issuing check, invoice entry, and petty cash management.
Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with department heads to develop annual budgets and forecasts. Monitor and analyze financial performance against budgeted targets. Provide recommendations for cost optimization and revenue enhancement. Review cost centers monthly with budgeting managers.
Cash Management: Oversee cash flow planning and forecasting. Manage banking relationships, including maintaining lines of credit and optimizing cash balances. Implement strategies to maximize cash flow and minimize risks.
Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations. Conduct periodic audits to identify control weaknesses and implement corrective actions.
Financial Analysis: Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement. Prepare financial models and projections to support CFO in strategic decision-making. Provide insights and recommendations to senior management.
Financial Planning: Assist in the development and execution of financial strategies and initiatives. Evaluate potential investments and acquisitions, perform due diligence, and assess financial feasibility.
Team Management: Supervise and mentor finance department staff. Set performance objectives, conduct performance evaluations, and provide ongoing feedback and coaching. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
Compliance and Audit: Ensure compliance with applicable financial regulations and standards. Coordinate and manage external audits, including liaising with auditors and other professional firms (accounting, legal, consulting) and addressing any findings or recommendations.
Systems and Process Improvement: Continuously evaluate and enhance financial systems, processes, and controls. Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency gains. Implement best practices to streamline financial operations.
Payroll Management: Handle essential duties related to payroll and administer the Company’s sponsored 401(k) Plan, ensuring compliance with ERISA regulations.
Tax Management: Identify and address tax (sales and corporate) and risk management issues, ensuring compliance with applicable laws. Review and make adjustments to Sales and Use Tax Returns for multiple states and file Canadian GST tax return.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Undergraduate accounting degree. A master's degree or CPA designation is highly desirable.
- Proven experience as a Controller or in a similar financial management role.
- Advanced proficiency in financial software and ERP systems. (Knowledge of Business Central ERP software is a plus.)
- Experience working in accounting with a public or private company.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and financial reporting standards (GAAP/IFRS).
- Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Solid understanding of internal controls and risk management.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
