What are the responsibilities and job description for the MIddle School Science Teacher position at Caldwell County Schools?
Position Overview
The 7th Grade Science Teacher will facilitate a rigorous, inquiry-based learning environment that aligns with the Kentucky Academic Standards for Science. The ideal candidate will move beyond traditional lecture, instead using "Three-Dimensional Learning"—integrating Disciplinary Core Ideas, Science and Engineering Practices, and Crosscutting Concepts. Given the hands-on nature of the 7th-grade lab curriculum, superior classroom management and safety supervision are essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Instructional Delivery (NGSS/KAS Focused)
- Phenomena-Based Instruction: Design units around real-world "phenomena" to anchor student learning and spark scientific questioning.
- Core Content Areas: Lead comprehensive instruction in 7th-grade domains, typically including:
- MS-PS (Physical Science): Matter, Chemical Reactions, Forces and Motion
- MS-LS (Life Science): Structure and function of cells, body systems, reproduction/genetics, and the cycling of matter/energy in ecosystems.
- MS-ESS (Earth & Space Science): Earth’s systems, weather and climate, and human impact on the environment.
- Scientific Literacy: Incorporate technical reading and CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) writing to support school-wide literacy goals.
2. Laboratory Leadership & Safety
- Inquiry-Based Labs: Organize and lead frequent hands-on investigations where students act as scientists (developing models, analyzing data, and planning investigations).
- Safety Protocols: Maintain a safe laboratory environment, ensuring all students follow OSHA and district-specific safety guidelines for chemicals, biological specimens, and equipment.
- Material Management: Oversee the procurement, organization, and maintenance of lab supplies, microscopes, and technology (e.g., probeware).
3. Assessment & Accountability
- Three-Dimensional Assessment: Develop assessments that evaluate not just what students know, but what they can do with that knowledge.
- KSA Science Preparation: Prepare students for the Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA) by building the critical thinking skills necessary for the 8th-grade science accountability peak.
- Data-Driven Instruction: Use formative assessment data to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including those with IEPs and 504 plans.
4. Classroom Management
- Lab Transitions: Execute seamless transitions between traditional seatwork and lab stations to maximize instructional time.
- Collaborative Culture: Foster a "culture of error" where students feel safe to hypothesize, fail, and re-test ideas.
Qualifications
- Certification: Valid Kentucky Teaching Certificate for Middle School Science (Grades 5–9).
- Technical Proficiency: Ability to integrate educational technology (Google Classroom, virtual simulations like PhET, and digital data collection).
- Mindset: A commitment to the "All Students, All Standards" philosophy, ensuring equitable access to high-level scientific concepts.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to manage a science classroom/lab, which may include standing for long periods and safely handling lab equipment and materials.
