What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Custom Woodworker and Installer position at calaway designs?
Lead Custom Woodworker & Installer
Pay: $23–33/hour DOE
Full-Time
At Calaway Designs, we don't build the same thing twice.
We're a custom fabrication and woodworking company creating one-of-a-kind architectural features for luxury homes and commercial spaces throughout Utah. Every project is different—custom doors, built-ins, fireplaces, furniture, wall paneling, stair components, architectural details, and taking on whatever unique challenge comes next.
We're looking for someone who loves solving problems, takes pride in craftsmanship, and wants to help build projects that don't come out of a catalog.
What You'll Do
As our Lead Custom Woodworker, you'll be responsible for taking projects from drawings to finished installation.
You'll primarily work in our shop while leading the woodworking side of production, with occasional on-site installations when projects require it.
Responsibilities include:
- Build high-end custom woodworking projects from start to finish
- Read shop drawings and execute work accurately
- Plan project sequencing and keep work moving efficiently
- Help improve shop processes and organization
- Maintain exceptional quality standards
- Install finished work on-site when needed
- Work alongside our metal fabrication team to create integrated architectural projects
- Mentor and assist other team members when needed
We're Looking For Someone Who:
- Has experience building custom woodworking projects—not production cabinet work
- Is a self-starter who doesn't need constant supervision
- Takes ownership of their work and solves problems independently
- Has excellent attention to detail
- Enjoys challenging, one-off projects
- Communicates well with teammates and clients
- Is dependable and shows up ready to work
- Wants to continually improve both their craft and the shop
Preferred Skills
- Experience with hardwoods, veneers, sheet goods, and architectural millwork
- Comfortable using both hand tools and woodworking machinery
- Experience with installation and field adjustments
- Ability to troubleshoot and adapt when projects evolve
- Finishing experience is a plus
- Basic CAD or shop drawing experience is a plus
Requirements
- Valid driver's license
- Reliable transportation to work
- Ability to lift and move materials
- Personal woodworking tools are a plus
- Work truck is a plus for installation days
