District Nurse Job Description
Requirements: BSN in Nursing with a current Iowa license and CTE 5-12 General Health Occupations - 299 or willingness to receive authorization.
Basic Function:
To develop and direct school nursing services. Provides leadership, supervision, consultation, coordination, professional development, program development and program evaluation for the school nursing program.
Initiates contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
Position Responsibilities:
- Develops and implements nursing program components necessary for compliance with federal and state law as well as local and district policies.
- Perform duties under the guidelines of the Nurse Practice Act and follow HIPPA and FERPA laws.
- Maintains accurate medical records to ensure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions. Establishes procedures and manages student health screening programs and administration of medication.
- Plans and oversees instructions of CPR and Med Administration preparedness.
- Maintains district AED inventory.
- Initiates timely contact with and acts as a liaison between the home, school, community health agencies and the private medical sector to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
- Works in conjunction with special education staff, nurses, and administrators, to develop and oversee the implementation of health plans for IEP and homebound students.
- Works with nurses and staff to develop, train, and implement safety evacuation plans for students with limited mobility or wheelchairs.
- Develops contracts for private duty nurses and guides their work in our schools.
- Assists content areas specialists with staff professional learning as it relates to the school nursing program and health and well-being of students.
- Represents the district with community partners to coordinate needed health services for staff and students.
- Coordinates with the school Medicaid program and nurses as it relates to medical billing.
- Monitor nursing services in our schools on a daily basis and floats to buildings to provide coverage when necessary.
- Work with Summer learning and extended school year programs to plan for nursing service coverage during summer classes.
- Teach different courses assigned for nursing students
- Member of district CTE team and attend regional meetings as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
