Working Title: Interpreter I

The purpose of this recruitment is to produce a pool of qualified applicants to call upon for temporary/emergency hire appointments. Successful candidates may be appointed for a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments may be canceled or extended at any time. Classification Salary Range: $26.54 - $62.26 hourly.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $30 - $40 hourly.

The final salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, the Interpreter I provides interpreting services to facilitate communication, mainly in classroom or related instructional settings and activities. Assignments may include technical or specialized subject matter and vocabulary. Individual assignments can vary based on the interpreter ‘s specific skills and the needs of students or other users. More challenging tasks may involve interpreting technical or specialized content and terminology, accommodating consumer requests for different language preferences, and interpreting fast-paced material.

This will be an hourly intermittent position as needed based on student's needs and class schedules

Key Responsibilities:
  • Sign language interpreters facilitate the communication and integration of deaf and hard-of-hearing, or otherwise disabled students and consumers (including faculty, staff and university guests) into the classroom, other instructional settings, and into the university community either by way of American Sign language (ASL), or Signed English, Transliteration (a manual, oral, or tactile system of communication).
  • Provide Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing students with equal access to instruction as hearing students-considering language and cultural differences-the skilled Interpreter I adapts terminology, language, instruction, concepts, theories, and emotions to accurately convey all aspects of lectures, teaching materials, and experiences.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience: Any combination of experience and training in voice to sign or sign to voice interpreting or transliterating which demonstrates assurance of skills appropriate for the level of the assignment.
  • Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in either interpreting or transliteration as issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or possess and maintain NIC (National Interpreter Certification) certification issued by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or comparable certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language or other sign system required by the student or the assignment.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in communicating with hearing-impaired persons.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Ethics prepared by the National Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Some assignments may require knowledge of professional and technical signs or knowledge of the vocabulary used in the courses to which assigned.
  • Ability to hear spoken speech communication.
  • Ability to use American Sign Language or other sign systems.
  • Ability to interpret spoken English (spoken to visible) at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to interpret visible to spoken communication at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
  • Ability to transliterate by providing vocal expression of a hearing-impaired speaker to hearing persons.
  • Ability to interpret or transliterate for a group of speaking and non-speaking persons.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years of experience preferred.
  • Combination of experience and training equivalent to those prescribed for certification in one of the following categories: Interpreter Certificate, Transliterator Certificate, Comprehensive Skills Certificate, or one of the Oral Transliterator Certificates.
