JOB SUMMARY/DEFINITION

Under the direction of the Coordinator, Child Nutrition Services, receive, heat, store, portion and serve food at an assigned school site in compliance with state and federal regulations; maintain kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas in a clean and sanitary condition; train and provide work direction to student workers and other Food Service Workers as assigned.

 

Food Service Worker Ill incumbents heat and portion food, set up salad bar, serve meals, maintain accurate records, and provide work direction to student workers and cashier at a school site.

 

 

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Verify food deliveries to assure adequate quantities; request adjustments and additional items as needed.

    1. Heat or chill food as appropriate for serving.
    2. Set up and stock salad bar; restock items and dressings as needed.
    3. Supervise and train student helpers and others as assigned.
    4. Count items sold and served at lunch and nutrition.
    5. Maintain required records related to food served, sales, and inventory and food items left over.
    6. Prepare reports and forms regarding lunch sales and food/supply orders.
    7. Clean, wash and sanitize food service equipment, utensils, serving areas and related facilities.
    8. Work with and around hazardous materials.
    9. May be required to participate in emergency cleanup of hazardous materials spills.
    10. Estimate and order food supplies according to established menus and procedures.
    11. Lock and secure kitchen facilities.
       12. Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

 

Knowledqe of:

  1. Sanitation practices related to the cooking and serving of food.
  2. Health and safety practices and procedures in kitchen areas.
  3. Record keeping procedures.
  4. Basic math skills
  5. Portion control techniques.
  6. Operation of commercial kitchen equipment.
  7. Proper serving temperatures and storage methods for various types of food.
  8. State and federal child nutrition regulations.
  9. Proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.

Ability to:

  1. Heat, chill, portion and serve bulk-pack food according to established procedures and regulations.
  2. Assure the timely ordering, receipt, serving and cleanup of meals and food items at an assigned school site.
  3. Meet demanding schedules and time lines. Work effectively under rush conditions. Observe established health, safety and sanitation regulations.
  4. Lift containers of food and other objects weighing up to 40 pounds. Train and provide work direction to student workers and others as assigned.
  5. Maintain accurate records and prepare reports, orders and estimates.
  6. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with others.
  7. Operate commercial kitchen equipment.
  8. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Work independently, following established procedures, with minimal supervision.

 

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and two years large quantity food preparation experience.

 

Licenses:

Possession of a valid Certification as a Serve Safe Food Manager from a source approved by the County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health; possession of a valid California driver’s license.

 

Working Conditions:

Kitchen environment; subject to temperature extremes, standing for tong periods and lifting heavy objects.
