Summary
The Controller is a hands-on financial leader responsible for managing daily accounting operations while providing strategic financial guidance for the business that includes coffee roasting with wholesale and retail components, along with café retail. This role owns financial accuracy, cash flow, and reporting while partnering closely with ownership to support growth, profitability, and operational decision-making.
Key Responsibilities Core Accounting & Financial Operations
- Manage day-to-day accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll, general ledger, and month-end/year-end close.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP. Maintain chart of accounts and ensure proper expense and revenue classification across channels.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, including balance sheet and income statement, and management reports.
- Oversee cash management, bank reconciliations, and credit card reconciliations.
- Oversee inventory accounting for green coffee and materials, WIP, finished goods, and café components.
- Partner with production, café and service team leadership to improve inventory accuracy and margin performance.
- Supervise Purchasing Coordinator and cooperate for cash planning needs.
- Track COGS, roasting yields, shrink, waste, and production labor.
- Document, implement, monitor and train employees for adherence to internal controls and financial policies to prevent errors or fraud and to protect company assets.
- Lead and develop a growing accounting team.
- Conduct internal audits and reconciliations to ensure compliance with internal controls.
- Manage banking relationships, financing, and risk mitigation.
- Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis Develop and maintain annual budgets and rolling forecasts.
- Analyzing historical data to project future revenue, expenses, and cash flow needs.
- Create and analyze class-specific (Roast, Café, Service) P&Ls.
- Monitor performance against budget and identify trends and risks.
- Provide actionable insights on pricing, labor and cost control.
- Identify and report on economic trends and key performance indicators (KPIs) to help leadership make informed decisions.
- Report directly to Ownership and advise on financial strategy, capital allocation, and risk management.
