This post has the responsibility of walking all barns and enforcing all IHRC Rules and Regulations, and Track Rules.
Barn Walker
Job responsibilities include:
Remaining alert for fire and potential fire hazards.
· Reporting all safety hazards immediately to your supervisor and correct if possible.
· Enforce the rules and regulations if the following items are observed, illegal drugs, needles/syringes, alcoholic beverages, dogs and firearms. Report violations immediately to supervision and IHRC Security.
· Enforce “No Smoking” rules in all the barns.
· Enforce parking rules around barns.
· Observe, report and protect.
· Enforce all IHRC rules and regulations
Additional job responsibilities on live racing days include:
· Pick up a radio and begin patrolling your assigned barn area. You must walk every barn and shed row that is in your assigned barn area.
· All horses in today racing must have a” horse in today “sign affixed to the stall front. It is the horseman’s responsibility to hang the “horse in today” sign up at the stalls of the horses that are racing that day. There could also be a “horse in today” sign on the stall front with no horse in the stall; the horse is shipping into that stall and must be in it 5 hours prior to its scheduled post time. It is the horseman’s responsibility to take down their “horse in today” sign after the horse has raced.
· Patrol assigned barns until all horses have been moved to the paddock. Once a horse has been moved to the Paddock, there is no need to continue to check it. If a horse has received Lasix, once it leave its stall to go to the Paddock, you must pull the Lasix tag that will be on the stall front.
· Observe all persons entering the stalls as to their activity noting any unusual activity such as treating, medicating, etc.. Note – horses may leave their stall for regular day to day activity (jogging, walking, bathing, grooming, blacksmithing, stall cleaning, etc.
· Report all IHRC or Track Violations and suspicious activity immediately to a Supervisor or IHRC Security. Report by radio, phone or direct personal contact.
· Identify any person involved in those violations or activity by asking for their IHRC license. Report any one refusing to produce a license.
· Protect all evidence of a violation that is discarded or placed in a container until a supervisor or IHRC Security Officer has arrived. In the event a person takes possession of an item of evidence, stay with that person until directed otherwise. Security Officers will not make physical contact with another person during this activity. (IHRC Rules state that horsemen have a duty to cooperate with Track Security).
· Barnwalkers/Rovers will be responsible for giving breaks or filling in for Vet Shadowers as needed.
· Practicing vets or their helpers are prohibited from having contact with a horse within twenty-four hours of its scheduled race except for Salix administration without IHRC approval.
· Report all horse deaths, accidental or euthanasia.
· Monitor radio traffic closely for pertinent information.
· Report by radio any loose horse and security of the horse.
· All other duties as assigned.
Vet Shadower
Job responsibilities include:
· Upon arrival to the Stable Gate, obtain required paperwork for Salix administration and go over scratches for that days racing. Pick up your radio and “common” area key. All Vet Escorts will then report to the “common” area.
· Observe practicing veterinarians or their helpers pre-draw injectable syringes. The draw will take place in the designated “common” area. Stay in the Salix room and observe the pre-draw of Salix.
· Once injectables are drawn, the vets are not to leave the “common” area without a Security escort.
· Escorts shall stay with their assigned vet either on foot or track vehicles. The vet is responsible for keeping the escort in sight.
· There are 3 things to check for before administering Salix.
· Correct barn number and stall number.
· Horse in today sign should be visible on front of stall.

Stable Gate
· Controlling all vehicular and pedestrian traffic at the gate . Vehicle traffic will be controlled by security arms located on both sides of stable gate.
· Completing Ship-In/Ship-Out forms. Ensure all horses have proper paperwork on file before being allowed in the stable area.
· Permitting only persons with proper IHRC credentials to enter. Assist IHRC licensee with visitors pass for guest.
· Making emergency announcements through the telephone paging system (barn paging 7145#) . This includes fire, weather, loose horse or emergency messages.
· Answer telephones professionally. Responsible for taking messages and filling out paperwork if there is a team member call off via telephone.
· Sign Veterinarians and their assistants in/out on approved IHRC Veterinarian Sheet. This form is turned in daily to IHRC.
· Fill out Transport Driver Sheet and copy drivers license . This form is turned in daily to IHRC .
· Monitor all radio traffic at all times and reply immediately. Make rounds on 4:00 PM-12 : 00 AM shift every 2 hours and logging round on Patrol Log sheet. On dark days all shifts will make round every 2 hours after training is over. Clean stable gate every shift. (sweep, empty trash, windows, counters) Assist emergency responders to proper locations . Officer must stay with responders . Maintain key control for the stable area and dormitory. Maintain control of the Dormitory registration. Regulate parking and traffic control. Emergency ice sales, after hours. Enforce all IHRC rules and regulations. Notify Supervisor immediately for all violations. Coordinate with IHRC security officials as requested . Conduct fire watch at all times. All other duties as assigned.
The only persons or vehicles authorized to enter the Backside area are as follows:
· Person displaying IHRC identification.
· IHRC Officials .
· Law enforcement officials accompanied by security personnel.
· Vehicles with Indiana Grand Racing • Casino official emblems .
· Visitors, guests , and others who, at the discretion of track management, have visitor passes issued by the Director of Security or his designee. All authorized deliveries by contract vendors (list maintained at security post) .
The following conduct or activities are prohibited in the Backside area:
· Crimes of any nature.
· Trespassing (no valid IHRC identification or visitor’s pass). Harboring of drug addicts. Harboring of unauthorized persons.
· Employees under the age of sixteen (unless approved by IHRC).
· Touting . Goading devices. Bribes or attempted bribes. Firearms, except law enforcement officers. Bookmaking . Possession of hypodermic needles or syringes except IHRC licensed veterinarians. Possession of drugs or chemicals by persons other than licensed veterinarians. Tipsters. Persons under the influence of alcohol. Selling alcoholic beverages. Dogs in the stable area . Consumption of alcohol i c beverages by any race official or track employee while on duty . Battery (fighting). Use of offensive or profane language. Smoking in barns or stabl e s . Illegal gambling . Prostitution or solicitation.
QUALFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED is required. Valid Motor Vehicle License with good driving record. Must be at least 18 yrs or older for Backside; 21 yrs or older on the Frontside. Must be capable of CPR/ AED/ First Aid certification and Indiana Horse Racing Commission licensure. Also, must be able to read, write and speak English.
