Position Summary

CAER Food Shelf is seeking a dependable, mission-driven Food Rescue Driver II to join our team as we expand our food rescue program. This newly created position will help increase the amount of fresh, nutritious food rescued from retail partners through a collaborative effort with Big Lake Community Food Shelf and Monticello Help Center. The Food Rescue Driver II will play a key role in collecting and distributing rescued food while strengthening partnerships and increasing food access throughout our community.

The Food Rescue Driver II operates a refrigerated, non-CDL 16 foot box truck, safely collecting, transporting, and distributing perishable and nonperishable food while maintaining food safety standards throughout the route. This position requires operating a commercial vehicle, excellent driving skills, reliability, physical stamina, and a commitment to serving the community with professionalism and care. Employment is contingent upon meeting and maintaining all applicable DOT driver qualification requirements.

This is a part-time, year-round position with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, approximately 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During the program's development, hours and route timing may fluctuate, with the opportunity for occasional additional hours as operational needs evolve. The successful candidate will be flexible, adaptable, and excited to help grow an innovative program that reduces food waste, strengthens community partnerships, and increases access to nutritious food.

Essential Responsibilities

• Safely operate a refrigerated, non-CDL 16 foot refrigerated box truck.
• Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Pick up donated food from a retail partner according to established schedules.
• Load and unload food donations safely and efficiently.
• Perform a high-level sort of donated products at pickup locations to remove clearly unusable items and organize donations for transport.
• Transport food to multiple partner food shelves while maintaining food safety and temperature requirements.
• Record food weights, temperatures, and required transportation documentation accurately.
• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and handling procedures.
• Clean and sanitize the vehicle as needed.
• Refuel the vehicle and report maintenance concerns promptly.
• Communicate professionally with retail partners, food shelf staff, volunteers, and CAER team members.
• Adapt to route, scheduling, and operational changes as the program develops.
• Assist with additional warehouse or food rescue duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Valid driver's license, current DOT Medical Card or able to acquire one, and a clean driving record. Ability to safely operate a refrigerated commercial vehicle (non-CDL).
• Completion of daily paperwork and truck inspections.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Experience operating larger vehicles or box trucks with a lift gate and working safely at loading docks required.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to accurately complete required logs and documentation.
• Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
• Dependable, punctual, and committed to excellent customer service.

Physical Requirements

This position regularly requires the ability to:

• Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Frequently bend, reach, twist, push, and pull.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Load and unload food donations throughout the workday.
• Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Work in refrigerated and freezer environments as needed.
• Enter and exit the truck multiple times throughout the route.

Schedule

This is a part-time, non-exempt, year-round position.

This Food Rescue Driver II position is scheduled to begin August 17, 2026, with occasional paid training hours prior to the official start date.

The developing program is expected to operate approximately 20–25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with typical hours between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Depending on staffing and program needs, these hours may be filled by one part-time employee, or divided between two part-time employees.

This is a new program in development, and the total number of weekly hours, daily schedule, and route timing may fluctuate as operations are refined. Occasional work outside of the typical schedule may be needed to meet operational needs.

Work Environment

This position requires frequent travel throughout the service area using a refrigerated box truck. Work is performed in warehouses, loading docks, food shelf environments, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The role requires safe operation of equipment, adherence to food safety standards, and regular interaction with community partners.
