Analytical Chemistry Support Specialist

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of HIV Prevention, is seeking laboratory professionals to support research activities aimed at reducing new HIV infections. This work supports clinical studies, surveillance, and implementation research by assisting with laboratory testing, analytical chemistry, and quality management processes. Depending on the role, candidates will either support analytical testing of biological specimens using advanced laboratory instrumentation (LC-MS/MS) or help maintain the laboratory's Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with CDC, CLIA, and other regulatory standards. These are full-time, onsite positions at the CDC campus in Atlanta, GA, supporting important public health research and laboratory operations.

Place of Performance: CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Buildings 17 & 18, Atlanta, GA

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, CDC Core Business Hours, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related scientific field.
  • Background in Analytical Chemistry.
  • Demonstrated laboratory skills obtained through:
  1. Academic coursework, and/or

Professional laboratory experience

  • Education or experience supporting HIV prevention research or related biomedical research.
  • Experience handling biological specimens is preferred.
  • Ability to work safely with potentially hazardous laboratory materials.
  • Experience operating, calibrating, or maintaining laboratory instrumentation is preferred.
  • Strong documentation, data analysis, and scientific recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to work onsite at the CDC laboratory in Atlanta, GA.

  • LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry)
  • Liquid Chromatography (LC)
  • Analytical method development and validation
  • Sample preparation and processing
  • Molecular or serologic laboratory techniques
  • Scientific data analysis
  • Laboratory quality systems

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Process and prepare biological specimens, including blood, tissues, cells, and other potentially hazardous samples for chemical analysis.
  • Perform laboratory testing using Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and other analytical techniques to support HIV prevention research.
  • Develop, optimize, and validate analytical methods for detecting and quantifying antiretroviral and antimicrobial drugs in biological specimens.
  • Collect, process, aliquot, label, store, and maintain biological samples following laboratory protocols.
  • Analyze biological specimens to evaluate drug distribution and support ongoing research studies.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, including LC-MS/MS instruments and analytical balances.
  • Document equipment calibration, maintenance, and quality records in accordance with the laboratory's Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Perform serologic and molecular laboratory assays supporting CDC clinical studies and surveillance activities.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks, experimental records, and research documentation.
  • Analyze laboratory data and prepare technical summaries, reports, and presentation materials.
  • Follow CDC laboratory safety procedures, biosafety practices, and quality standards while handling hazardous materials.
  • Collaborate with CDC scientists and laboratory personnel to support HIV prevention research and laboratory operations.
