Job Title:
Mechanical Sub-System Engineer

Job Function:
Technical

Location:
Hornell

Summary of Position:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Sub-System Engineer to support the successful delivery and integration of mechanical systems within rail vehicles for our client based in Hornell, NY. This role focuses on requirements management, supplier coordination, testing, and compliance verification—with no in-house design responsibilities.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience managing sub-systems such as brakes, HVAC, doors, or bogies/trucks (preferred but not required), and thrives in a cross-functional, safety-critical engineering environment.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and interpret customer specifications and technical requirements for mechanical sub-systems across the vehicle platform.
  • Coordinate with sub-system suppliers to review deliverables such as interface documents, compliance matrices, and validation plans.
  • Ensure sub-systems are properly integrated with vehicle-level mechanical, electrical, and control systems, managing interfaces and resolving cross-functional issues.
  • Support validation and verification activities, including FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing), static/dynamic vehicle testing, and commissioning.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and applicable regulations (e.g., EN 12663, EN 14752, APTA, ISO, or NFPA).
  • Participate in and support design reviews, hazard assessments, technical audits, and change management processes (ECR/ECO).
  • Track and manage technical issues, non-conformances, and interface deviations throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation, including requirements traceability, interface control documents (ICDs), and test reports.
  • Collaborate closely with systems engineering, procurement, quality, and vehicle integration teams.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering roles within rail, aerospace, heavy vehicle, or other safety-critical industries.
  • Proven experience managing or supporting mechanical sub-systems (e.g., brakes, HVAC, doors, couplers, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of systems integration principles, sub-system verification, and technical documentation practices.
  • Familiarity with rail industry standards (EN, APTA, AREMA) and systems engineering tools such as DOORS, Jama, or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience with bogie/truck systems (frames, suspensions, wheelsets, yaw dampers, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of vehicle dynamics, fatigue/life assessment, and safety certification.
  • Exposure to RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety) processes or hazard analysis.
