Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Underground Machine Operator to join our team. You will be responsible for the safe and precise operation of horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment—such as Vermeer or Ditch Witch rigs, as well as 1250 and 450 trenchers—to install underground utilities (fiber, electric, water, gas) with minimal surface disruption. You will work closely with locators and foremen to ensure all bore paths are executed according to blueprints and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Equipment Operation: Safely set up and operate horizontal directional drill rigs or trenchers and support equipment (mixing systems, vacuum excavation/mud vacs).
- Site Preparation: Conduct pre-job surveys and pothole existing utilities to verify depth and location before drilling or trenching
- Precision Boring: Read and interpret blueprints and utility maps to maintain proper depth, alignment, and grade throughout the bore or trench paths.
- Maintenance: Perform daily inspections and routine preventative maintenance (greasing, fluid checks) to ensure equipment longevity and job site safety.
- Reporting: Maintain accurate daily bore logs, as-builts, and safety documentation.
- Team Support: Assist with manual labor including loading materials, hand-digging, and site restoration (refilling holes, laying sod) as needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of experience operating HDD equipment specifically for underground utility installation.
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of drilling fluids (mud mixing), locating systems, and underground construction standards.
- Licensing: A valid driver’s license is required; Class A CDL is highly preferred for transporting heavy equipment.
- Safety Certifications: OSHA 10 or relevant safety training is preferred.
- Physical Demands: Must be able to work outdoors in Florida weather conditions and lift up to 50–75 lbsregularly.
- Soft Skills: Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities to handle emerging site issues.
