What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Phlebotomist-Outreach-PRN position at Cabell Huntington Hospital/St. Mary?
Responsible for providing phlebotomy services to outreach
facilities/nursing homes on a regular scheduled basis. Will deliver
specimens to laboratory department and assist with registration and
distribution of obtained specimens within department standards and hospital policies and procedures. High level of confidentiality required.
- Obtains patient lab requisition and collects specimens as ordered by
physician.
- Uses established direct identification process of nursing facility
prior to the collection of specimens.
- Obtain specimen in appropriate container for testing.
- Provide phlebotomy/courier services to outside accounts utilizing
private or corporate owned vehicle.
- Ensures that adequate supplies are available to complete anticipated
volume of testing. Checks par-level at nursing facility and
restocks as needed by completing lab supply requisition forms.
- Follows safety and infection control policies of the laboratory and
all other hospital and department policies and procedures.
- Participates in all mandated inservice programs on an annual basis.
- Demonstrates excellence in customer service skills.
- Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
- Participates in PI process.
- Other duties that may be assigned.
- Complies with Corporate Policies, Departmental Policies and
Procedures and Personnel Employee Handbook.
- Hours of work will vary due to allocation for travel time to nursing
facilities and draw time of ordered specimen. Start time will begin
at time of first work site, and will continue until they return to
employee’s primary residence (address on file). Employees are
responsible for notifying the office of any change in address.
- Transports specimen in appropriate container according to
regulations.
- Mileage calculation will begin at the first work site to nursing
facility, to hospital, and/or designated place and back to home.
- Assist with orientation to nursing facilities on collection of
specimens accordingly.
- Utilizes centrifuge at nursing facility as needed.
- Prepare samples properly for testing by reference laboratory in
appropriate fashion.
- Identify accession and distribute samples within department policy
And procedure.
- On call as directed.
- Respond to all calls within 15-minute time frame.
- Must have cell phone close by and be charged accordingly.
- Handles questions, make staffing adjustments and/or any other issue
of lab concern.
- Is responsible to notify other phlebotomist and courier in the area
of any staffing changes.
- In the event of a staffing "crisis" employee will have to directly
assist to provide coverage.
- Employee is to consult with immediate supervisor on any PVH employee
needle stick or other life-threatening issue at the immediate
reporting time.
- Employee will give a report to immediate supervisor Monday thru
Friday any issues, concerns, or call-offs by 9 a.m.
- Notify immediate supervisor two weeks in advance of any requested
time off.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
Completion of high school or equivalent (plus certification by ASCP
desirable). Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record.
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Three to six months preferred.
