Hiring range for this position is $33,737.60 - $40,310.40. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 10.
This position is located in the Child Welfare/Protective Services Unit.
There are times this position will require additional hours beyond the normal 8 am to 5 pm work schedule. Requires early morning hours before 8 am and some evening hours past 5 pm as needed. Will also have daily tasks that requires out of county travel.
General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate to advanced human support work assisting clients and transporting them to assure they receive medical, social, and educational services. Specific assignments vary according to each client’s needs. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a social work supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Transport children and youth to medical, educational, social, and other required appointments to ensure timely access to necessary services.
- Supervise family visitation between parents/caregivers and children in care by observing interactions, intervening when inappropriate behaviors occur, modeling appropriate parenting and discipline techniques, and maintaining thorough documentation while ensuring confidentiality.
- Accompany and assist parents and/or children to appointments such as mental health counseling, domestic violence programs, substance use treatment, parenting classes, school meetings, and other required services.
- Discuss and reinforce basic parenting skills, child discipline strategies, child safety practices, and the care of children with special needs, as directed by the case plan.
- Provide emotional support to children experiencing changes in placement or family situations, helping them cope with transitions and stress.
- Document and report observations, behaviors, and interactions that may be helpful to case managers or service providers.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, case notes, and documentation of services provided in accordance with agency and state requirements.
- Testify in court regarding observations and interactions with families or youth as needed.
- Assist with placement changes by transporting, supporting, and accompanying children to new foster or kinship placements.
- Perform related duties as required, which may include supervising youth overnight in the agency in addition to emergency shelter operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Management Preferences and Requirements:
- Must have valid NC driver's license. Prior work in Social Services is strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of agency programs and community resources.
- Knowledge and skills in the use of personal computer is a plus.
- NC pre-service training or willing to attend.
- After hours is often required.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is desirable.
Minimum Education / Experience requirements
- Requires an appropriately accredited associate's degree designed to prepare support personnel for human services and one year of experience performing similar instructional and community services tasks; or
- Graduation from high school and two years of experience performing similar instructional and community services tasks.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

This is normally light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; some work may require the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing stairs for home visits, kneeling, standing and/or walking while interviewing various parties, reaching and fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing written or computer data, operation of office machines, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to a variety of fragrances and home conditions that could be hazardous to an individual with certain respiratory sensitivities; the worker is subject to contact with irate clients and/or family members who may be hostile, resistant or violent; homes that may be poorly maintained or unsafe living conditions; travel in unsafe areas where the threat of violence is real or insolated areas where access to emergency services may be difficult. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
