Hiring range for this position is $54,912.00 - $65,644.80. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 20.


General Definition of Work:

Performs difficult professional and responsible administrative work planning and overseeing the operation and maintenance of County and school parks and related grounds, facilities and equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Assistant Active Living and Parks Director. Supervision is exercised over park personnel.


Examples of Duties


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Supervising the operation and maintenance of County and school parks, park areas and equipment; coordinating work of maintenance and concession crews; planning and promoting information programs; securing monies used in transactions and collected; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

  • Plans, manages, directs and evaluates the daily operation and maintenance of parks and park programs.
  • Responsible for employment, directing, training, evaluating staff and has substantial influence in employment decisions.
  • Takes reservations for park shelters and athletic facilities.
  • Inspects work of crews and all park and school park grounds and buildings for compliance with safety standards and departmental policies.
  • Prepares work orders for safety and repairs at parks and school parks.
  • Prepares park budget, administers grants, and monitors expenditures.
  • Prepares and maintains records of park activities.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries on parks and need for services.
  • Ensures safety and security of park users.
  • Investigates and resolves citizen complaints regarding parks, buildings and facilities.
  • Serves as coordinator for youth athletic leagues.
  • Acts as a liaison with other agencies and departments on park projects.
  • Promotes park programs and facilities through media sources and flyers.
  • Evaluates park programs; recommends changes, additions and deletion of programs.
  • Assists with park and school park construction projects.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work location.
  • Assists in occasional clean-up, set-up, or repair of facilities.
  • Prunes and trims trees, shrubs and bushes. Operates chain saw and hand tools in performance of tasks.
  • Performs related tasks as required.


MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

  • Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the equipment and techniques necessary to successfully supervise parks and facilities and of the methods involved in organizing, conducting, promoting and supervising recreation activities. Some knowledge of first aid methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in recreation work. General knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of common hand tools and power chain saw. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, officials, and the general public; to express ideas clearly both orally and in writing; and to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.


Minimum Education / Experience requirements


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requires bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited college or university with major course work in parks and recreation management or related field and extensive experience in park operations and management activities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy. Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification preferred. Work schedule is Monday – Friday (8am-5pm). Some evening and weekend coverage is required.

Salary : $54,921 - $65,645
