What are the responsibilities and job description for the EHS Specialist position at C0501 GFL Environmental Services USA, LLC?
The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist will administer and coordinate various loss control and risk management duties primarily focused on the areas of workers compensation, controlled substance and alcohol testing. Act as liaison between outside health care resources, insurance carriers and claims management · Provide safety oversight and issue resolution for any major projects undertaken. · Prepare site specific safety plans include confine space entry, ventilation, cribbing and rescue operations. · Review lift plans to ensure company requirements are met · Ensure work is safely executed in the facilities and at customer locations. · Audit GFL requirements to ensure compliance and provide coaching to employees and contractors. · Coach and evaluate the effectiveness of the annual safety priorities for improvements. · Provide leadership on housekeeping by reviewing the deficiencies, following up on the actions, and ensuring a consistent standard is followed. · Participate in the development and implementation of safety programs, policies and procedures for OSHA safety compliance. · Supports all the decisions made by the SLT and clearly communicate the decisions to employees. · Ensure that GFL facilities comply with OSHA and other local, state, and federal standards. · Actively monitor/inspect the workplace to determine the presence of hazards and take appropriate action to rectify any hazards found. · Provide training to employees to follow safe work practices and maintain a safe working environment through training, presentations, conference calls, and the distribution of safety materials. · Ensure that all hazardous and nonhazardous waste management activities are conducted in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. · Ensure Housekeeping activities are conducted through site audits and driving the necessary behaviors to improve the day the day facility conditions. · Conduct regular audits of hazardous and nonhazardous waste management processes and procedures to identify and address areas for improvement. · Stay current with advancements in hazardous waste management technology and best practices. · Drive a proactive, owner-based health and safety culture across the business by providing visible support and leadership for safety meetings, and toolbox sessions, · Support Good Catches, Hazard IDs and Near Miss reporting and other safety observation programs for the facilities, and work with employees to ensure programs are of high quality. · Maintain and manage all safety-related training records. · Ensure first-aid kits, AED machines, fire extinguishers and safety supplies are maintained & compliant · Manage Personal Protective Equipment at the time of New Hire Orientation and on an “As Needed” basis throughout and employee’s employment. · Conduct New Hire Safety Orientation for new employees. · Ability to travel regularly to customer locations and other company locations DOT Safety – where applicable to role · Conduct driver ride alongs and evaluate safety habits. · Ensure compliance with DOT Drug and Alcohol (D&A) Testing Program. · Review driver coaching efforts related to triggered behaviors from telematics systems focusing on improving driver behavior and safety. · Investigate and report on accidents where injuries occur and help implement corrective actions to prevent future incidents. · Advise on the selection and use of personal protective equipment for drivers. · Collaborate with cross-functional team (Fleet) to develop and implement safety initiatives. Emergency Response · Provide coordinated efforts and support for the Safety and Emergency Response program. · Coach teams and individuals on Safety and Emergency Response related tasks and activities. · With support from specialized contractors, manage the fire protection systems and equipment. · Coordinate at least one safety drill per year at each location. Health and Safety Management Systems and Injury Management · Actively support the injury management process to ensure the appropriate level of care is administered. · Ensure a working relationship is maintained with key personnel at designated clinics and injury management protocols are in place and robust. · Conduct cause mapping for accidents and incidents to determine root cause, procedure/policy compliance and develop plans to prevent similar accidents/incidents. · Ensure the successful implementation of detailed, task level, day-to-day work process, standards, and procedures, with guidance from the EHS Regional Manager. · Complete assigned training on time. · Maintain Online Portals used by GFL Safety. · Perform other duties as assigned by manager. Qualifications · Degree or Diploma in health and safety or equivalent education and experience. Safety Compliance experience would be an asset. · 3-5 years’ experience as an EHS professional or in a related role. · Comprehensive/working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and industry safety standards. · Knowledgeable of upstream and midstream hydrocarbon operations. · Strong computer proficiency including MS Office, power point, excel and computer databases. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. · Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication and presentation skills. · Self-starting proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment.
