A hygiene assistant supports dental hygienists by preparing treatment rooms, sterilizing instruments, managing patient flow, taking X-rays and educating patients on oral hygiene, allowing the hygienist to focus on clinical care and building patient rapport. Duties range from clinical tasks like suctioning and polishing to administrative duties like charting and scheduling, ensuring smooth office operations and a positive patient experience.
Core Clinical Duties
· Patient Preparation: Greeting patients, seating them, and ensuring comfort.
· Room Setup & Sterilization: Cleaning, disinfecting, and setting up operatories and instruments according to OSHA standards.
· Assisting Hygienist: Suctioning, passing instruments, and helping with exams and charting.
· Taking X-Rays: Exposing and developing dental radiographs (if certified).
· Preventive Treatments: Applying fluoride treatments or polishing teeth after the hygienist scales (depending on state regulations).
· Patient Education: Reinforcing home care instructions (brushing, flossing) and treatment plans.
Administrative & Office Duties
· Patient Flow: Guiding patients to the front desk after appointments to minimize wait times.
· Record Keeping: Updating patient histories and charting.
· Inventory Management: Monitoring and restocking hygiene supplies.
· Scheduling: Assisting with appointment scheduling and confirmation.
