FT/PT Direct Care Worker

TITLE: Paraprofessional/Direct Service Provider

JOB OBJECTIVES:

To assure that people who receive services at R.O.O.C., Inc. are provided with high quality services that are designed to meet their individualized needs.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Direct Service Providers work directly with people with disabilities to provide individualized and group training activities. They develop schedules, follow lesson plans and lead activities to meet the individual needs of persons served and they obtain and/or request supplies needed to complete these activities. They follow written plans of service and communicate information to program staff, group homes, families, employers and others both verbally and in writing. Direct Service Providers may work in building or community settings. They may assist individuals with personal care areas including meals, grooming and restroom needs. This position is considered at-risk for exposure to Hepatitis B and may come in contact with chemicals used for cleaning, disinfecting or manufacturing purposes.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Direct Care Duties

• Provide services and/or supports consistent with the Individual Plan of Service.
• Develop and/or follow implemented curricular materials.
• Set up and maintain the physical space in a way that facilitates completion of planned activities.
• Request supplies as needed to assure necessary materials are on hand.
• Provide skill training in a way that:
• • Maximizes individual independence in the learning process
  • Engages each person served in the activities
  • Results in improved skills or understanding of skills needed for increased independence
  • Promotes personal problem solving
• Use positive behavioral approaches in a manner consistent with training.
• Assure there is adequate supervision for persons served at all times. Supervise clients during arrival and departure.
• When assigned, provide supervision on a bus and offer training on proper utilization of public transportation.
• Accurately maintain records of individual progress toward goals, work completed, and/or other information as requested.
• Notify the program manager and complete an incident report for any unusual incidents involving clients.
• Assist persons served with personal care as needed.
• Provide high quality services to all stakeholders at all times.
• Plan community activities that promote integration and relationship-building with community members.
• Professionally and positively represent the organization and the people we serve to the community at large.
• When in community settings, support people to integrate by:
• • Positively representing their skills and abilities
  • Encouraging and modeling behavior appropriate to the environment
  • Developing natural supports
• Serve as an advocate for persons served and assure their individual concerns are addressed.
• Provide job coaching for persons receiving supported employment.
• Respite care services may be requested by your supervisor.

GENERAL DUTIES:

• Notify supervisor of all deviations from the normal work schedule.
• Assure a safe working environment for self and persons served and report and document any injuries.
• Treat property and assets of the organization with care.
• Dress and act professionally at all times.
• Use respectful language and tone of voice at all times.
• Display an attitude of care, concern and respect for persons with disabilities.
• Consistently demonstrate concepts of Culture of Gentleness.
• Follow all established policies, practices and procedures of the organization.
• Keep work area in a neat and organized manner; keep surrounding areas clean and orderly.
• Recommend procurement of supplies and maintenance of all equipment, materials and physical areas.
• Attend, participate in and utilize skills developed during meetings/trainings/professional development provided by the organization.
• Communicate effectively with families, persons served, staff or others.
• Complete assignments as scheduled.
• Utilize technology as needed.
• Work effectively with others as part of a team.
• Maintain the rights and confidentiality of persons served.
• Complete other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE/QUALIFICATIONS:

• At least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license.
• Knowledge and/or the ability to acquire the knowledge necessary to work with persons with disabilities.
• Able to work cooperatively with co-workers and supervisory staff.
• Able to provide skills training associated with the assigned work area.
• Must be physically capable of performing physical intervention, providing restroom assistance and/or moving materials as assigned.
• Must pass a State and Federal criminal background check.
• Computer skills, including the ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, the Internet and email.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Hourly position per Master Agreement established between the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District and the C.O.O.R. Educational Support Personnel Association.
