Purpose: The Director of Accounting and Finance will be the top finance and accounting executive for Bynum School and will be a key member of senior management. The Director of Accounting and Finance will be responsible for the development and execution of the financial strategy that supports Bynum School’s business plans and will oversee all of Bynum School’s finance, treasury, accounting, budget, tax, information technology, and audit activities. The Director of Accounting and Finance will coordinate with the senior management team to ensure the success of all internal and external financial and accounting system controls and standards, and ensure timely financial and statistical reporting.
Education: Undergraduate degree, preferably in finance or accounting. CPA and/or MBA is a strong plus.
Experience: Nonprofit organization preferred

Major Responsibilities:
- Member of senior management: Develops a strong and credible relationship with the Executive Director, Head of School, and the Director of Development. Helps set the strategy for the direction of Bynum School as well as implementation and execution of tactical decisions. Plan creatively. Possesses a strategic outlook.
- Board Interface: Develops a solid relationship with the Board of Directors (and related committees thereof) based on demonstrated financial and accounting competence and knowledge of Bynum’s business, plans and performance. Anticipates the Board of Directors’ information requirements. Prepares to discuss ongoing performance and special projects (e.g., major capital expenditures, balance sheet and other capital investment considerations). Works with Endowment Board to monitor investment of Endowment funds
- Treasury: Ensures Bynum School’s ongoing cash management systems accurately project cash flows and properly invests excess cash, manages debt. Manages relationships with lenders and other financiers. Ensures that adequate funds are available to ensure that Bynum School can carry out its work.
- Planning/Analysis: Works closely with the senior management team and the Board of Directors on strategic and operating plans. Prepares and presents annual budgets. Monitors performance versus plans and budgets, and provides useful and objective analysis to other executives. Directs the financial analysis related to other strategic initiatives such as special projects.
- Accounting and Reporting: Initiates budget development. Maintains and updates accounting policies, procedures, and systems necessary to ensure accurate and timely reporting of Bynum School’s performance. Manages reporting and analysis, including external reporting, to comply with all relevant laws and requirements. Proactively interprets relevant and appropriate accounting issues. Oversees annual audit process. Coordinates financial aspects of fundraisers with the Director of Development. Closes finances for fundraisers. Prepares annual financial report. Collects and submits payroll data to payroll service. Approves payroll for each payroll period. Coordinates enrollment in employee benefits programs. Responsible for all aspects of accounting.
- Development and Foundation Relations: Works closely with the Executive Director and Director of Development to maintain effective and open relationships with foundations, donors and the non-profit community. Prepares financial reports and budgets for grant applications. Prepares project reports for donors and grantors.
- Risk Management: Manages Bynum School’s insurance and risk management programs.
- Systems: Ensures that financial systems meet the needs of Bynum School and improve productivity, profitability and efficiency. A dynamic and flexible reporting environment is necessary as Bynum continues to grow.
- Tax: Ensures that Bynum School receives the most favorable tax positions, while ensuring Bynum complies with all applicable tax laws.
