What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) position at BWI?
Job Title: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – Steel Fabrication
Location: Greeley, Colorado
Reports To: Plant Manager
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) who lives on the shop floor—not behind a desk. This role is the first line of defense for quality, ensuring every weld, fit-up, and assembly meets our standards before it ever reaches final inspection.
You will work directly with welders, fitters, and supervisors to build quality into the process, not inspect it at the end.
What You’ll Do
- Be on the floor 100% of the time, actively inspecting work in progress
- Perform in-process weld inspections (fit-up, prep, root pass, final welds)
- Verify compliance with WPS, drawings, and customer specifications
- Catch and correct issues before they become rework
- Work side-by-side with welders to coach and improve quality in real time
- Ensure proper material traceability and weld documentation
- Coordinate with the Quality Department to ensure final inspections pass the first time
- Identify recurring defects and drive root cause corrective actions
- Support a zero-defect, no-excuses culture
What We’re Looking For
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification (required)
- Strong knowledge of AWS codes, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings
- Experience in structural steel, pipe, or heavy fabrication
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and WPS/PQRs
- Hands-on mindset—comfortable working in a fast-paced shop environment
- Strong communication skills—able to hold the line on quality while building respect with the team
- Detail-oriented with a zero-tolerance mindset for defects
What Success Looks Like
- Problems are caught immediately—not at final inspection
- Welders know the standard and hit it every time
- Rework is minimized because quality is built in, not inspected in
- The Quality Department’s final inspection becomes a formality, not a firefight
Why Join Us
- Be part of a high-performance manufacturing team
- Work in an environment focused on lean, quality, and continuous improvement
- Opportunity to make a direct impact on production, cost, and customer satisfaction
If you’re a no-excuses CWI who takes pride in catching issues before they become problems—and you want to be in the middle of the action, not on the sidelines—we want to talk to you.
