What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Manager - Product Design position at Buyers Products Company?
The Senior Manager of Product Design provides strategic and operational leadership for product design and upstream engineering activities supporting Buyers Products’ manufacturing-focused product lines. This role sets design direction while ensuring product concepts transition efficiently into producible, cost-effective, and high-quality solutions.
This leader manages and develops a team of project engineers, estimators, and model shop personnel, building a culture of accountability, practical problem-solving, and continuous improvement. Success in this role is measured by design quality, manufacturability, cost control, execution discipline, and the ability to support production and business objectives—not by design artifacts alone.
The Senior Manager partners closely with Engineering Leadership, Manufacturing, Sourcing, and Product Management to influence product architecture early, reduce downstream manufacturing risk, and ensure design intent aligns with real-world production capabilities.
What You’ll Do
- Set product design strategy and execution priorities aligned with business, manufacturing, and cost objectives
- Lead and manage a team of project engineers and support staff with clear expectations for ownership, performance, and accountability
- Drive upstream design engagement to ensure manufacturability, serviceability, and cost are considered early in product development
- Lead design reviews focused on function, durability, cost, risk reduction, and production readiness
- Establish and maintain consistent design processes, review cadences, and documentation standards that support scalability and repeatability
- Partner with Manufacturing and Operations to support launch readiness, production support, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Collaborate with peer Engineering Managers and Product Management to align product roadmaps, priorities, and resource planning
- Support development of cost estimates, design alternatives, and trade studies that balance performance, quality, and cost
- Ensure design outputs meet internal standards, regulatory requirements, and quality system expectations
- Capture lessons learned and contribute to the evolution of engineering and design best practices
- Foster a hands-on, practical design culture grounded in real-world use, manufacturing realities, and field performance
What You’ll Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field
- 8–10 years of progressive product design or engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
- 3 years of people-management or technical leadership experience
- Strong understanding of mechanical design, fabrication methods, and manufacturing processes
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, set priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment
- Experience partnering across engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, and product management
- Strong problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills
- Clear, direct communication style with the ability to influence without over-structuring
- Working knowledge of CAD systems, engineering documentation practices, and design release processes
- Positive, ownership-driven mindset with a focus on execution and continuous improvement
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Mobility and dexterity to move around office settings including accessing file cabinets or storage and navigating to different workstations.
- Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods of time and engage in some repetitive motion.
- Standing, walking and sitting for extended periods of time.
