This is an outpatient clinic position similar to a Medical Assistant role, working directly with patients and an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Patient Care Assistant is an essential member of BNWC’s clinical care team, supporting care delivery through basic administrative and clinical tasks. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, this position plays a key role in maintaining patient flow and assisting with daily clinic operations. Responsibilities include rooming patients, performing age-appropriate screenings, preparing exam areas, collecting specimens, and documenting basic information. This position offers an excellent opportunity to begin a healthcare career while serving the Native community.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Welcome and room patients; obtain chief complaint and vital signs.
  • Prepare examination areas for provider examinations and procedures, ensuring patient comfort and privacy.
  • Assist with basic age-appropriate health screenings (e.g., vision, developmental, behavioral), as directed by clinical protocols.
  • Perform basic phlebotomy duties including blood draws and specimen collection following established protocols after completing required certification and training.
  • Clean and sanitize examination rooms between patient visits to maintain infection control standards.
  • Restock medical supplies, and equipment in patient care areas and maintain inventory levels.
  • Answer clinical telephone, direct calls appropriately, and take accurate messages for clinical staff and providers.
  • Perform warm handoffs and coordinate patient transitions between services.
  • Support patient registration and check-in processes to facilitate efficient clinic workflow.
  • Facilitate the scheduling of follow-up appointments and coordinate patient care needs with clinical team members.
  • Document patient interactions and clinical tasks in the electronic health record (EHR) according to clinic protocols.
  • Maintain strict patient confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations.
  • Support overall clinic workflows and participate in quality improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Provide culturally competent, trauma-informed care to all patients in coordination with licensed clinical staff.
  • Providing emotional support, active listening, and encouragement to patients and their families.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work within defined scope of practice and escalate clinical concerns appropriately.
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages, from birth through elder.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other members of the care team in a professional and compassionate manner.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse populations and maintain positive patient relationships.
  • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn electronic health record systems and clinic software.
  • Willingness to learn and complete phlebotomy training
  • Ability to follow established protocols and procedures accurately and consistently.
  • Organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations and clinic policies.
  • Cultural humility and commitment to providing culturally responsive services to the Native community.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and commitment to consistent attendance.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
  • Physical ability to perform basic clinical support tasks and maintain patient safety.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred but not required; BNWC may support certification after hire.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant (MA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program is preferred but not required.
  • Previous healthcare, customer service, or administrative experience preferred but not required.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred.
  • Familiarity with Native American culture and community health needs preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Current BLS certification or ability to obtain with first 90 days of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Essential job duties may require occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling medical or educational supplies and equipment. The ability to occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and utilize reaching, handling, fingering, and feeling movements is required. The ability to hear normal conversational discussion and near and far visual clarity, or equivalent adaptation, is required. The employee may risk exposure to potentially dangerous situations, including exposure to communicable diseases.
