Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Road or Landfill Supervisor, the Light Equipment Operator I performs semi-skilled to skilled work mowing road ditches, weed eating, tree and brush removal, trash and debris collection, and occasionally performing maintenance of equipment. The employee in this position operates a variety of light equipment requiring some degree of skill in performing a variety of job assignments. This employee performs tasks related to road and bridge maintenance.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Hours Vary; Location of assignment determined by management
Duration: April - October; Start and end date of seasonal assignment determined by management
Examples of Work (Essential Functions):
Primary Duties:
- Operates light equipment such as a tractor, rotary mower, weed eater, chain saw and other light equipment;
- Performs all maintenance on tractor and rotary mower
Secondary duties:
- Cleans and paints structures;
- Constructs footings, piers and wings;
- Patches road and bridge surfaces using cold or hot mix;
- Performs road and bridge maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts and installing guardrail, cutting brush, tree trimming, and removing debris;
- Performs light maintenance and servicing of work in connection with the operations of related equipment, perform daily inspection of equipment;
- Cleans or lubricates vehicles, machinery, equipment, instruments, tools, work areas, and other objects, using hand tools, power tools, and cleaning equipment;
- Performs unskilled manual work as assigned;
- Rebuilds roads and bridges;
- Repairs and replaces wood, concrete and steel decks;
- Replaces structural steel, back walls, guardrails and nail ties;
- Spreads dirt, cover, gravel, sand, rock and asphalt, haul material and supplies to job sites;
- Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, chainsaws, drills, weed eaters, wrenches, shovels and rakes;
- Sets out signs and cones around work areas to divert traffic, flags motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead, perform work according to work zone safety guidelines;
- Operates equipment while paying close attention to public traffic, conditions, drivers;
- Sorts and segregates waste such as wood, brush, construction debris, rock, white goods, house hold hazardous waste;
- Installs and repairs traffic signs, signals, barricades, closes roads when appropriate;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.
Examples of Work (Marginal Functions):
- Sets forms, rebar and pours concrete;
- Lays seed and sod, mulch, performs landscaping, planting of trees, mowing;
- Performs welding, fabricating;
- Removes trash along roadside or at landfill;
- Performs repair to county equipment such as glass windshield replacements;
- Performs concrete work on small projects.
Certificate, License: Valid Kansas driver's license. Subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Hazwoper and other Blue Ridge Services safety training required if working at Landfill regularly. Landfill training is offered on site.
Required Education and/or Experience: Six months to twelve months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position. Knowledge of road and bridge maintenance, tractor operation experience, familiarity with rotary decks, ditch mowing, weed eating, knowledge of safe chainsaw handling and cutting techniques, and small equipment experience preferred.
Preferred Education and/or Experience: One year related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D.; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
