This position is 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Work schedule is flexible.


Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator III, the Health Program Coordinator provides support, education and referral services to expectant mothers. The employee in this position provides information to mothers about the care of their newborn infants. The Health Program Coordinator receives assignments from the Social Worker or the WIC/MCH nurse.

 

Examples of Work (Essential Functions):

  • Works closely with WIC dietician and advises clients on nutritional needs of newborns;
  • Assists and teaches clients basic infant care;
  • Assists clients by providing information on availability of family planning services;
  • Informs clients about child safety in the home, car seat laws and immunization requirements;
  • Makes home visits to expectant mothers, observes families and provides support to address needs of families; provides support and referral of services;
  • Participates in continuing education and training;
  • Provides public education and outreach activities to promote program and services;
  • Completes reports required for the program;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Certificate, License: Valid driver's license.

 

Required Education and/or Experience: One to three months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position.

 

Preferred Education and/or Experience: Three to six months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Advanced courses in maternal and child health. 

 

Abilities, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals;
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form;
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs;
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations;
  • Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of communications; Conveying and receiving detailed or important instructions and information to and from the general public;
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals;
  • Ability to reliably and predictably carry out duties;
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization;
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence;
  • Knowledge of community resources;
  • Skill in interpersonal communication such as concerned attitude, warm and friendly demeanor and reliable and dependable manner;
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

Problem Solving: Problem solving exists in this position. Problems include working with clients on child nutrition, health and hygiene.

 

Decision Making: Limited decision making exists in this position.

 

Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual budget process.

 

Supervision: Occasional supervision is provided and job related decisions are reviewed by the social worker or the WIC/MCH nurse. Employee does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

 

Personal Relationships: Occasional contact with other county employees/departments and continual contact with the public.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is not regularly exposed to adverse conditions. The employee will be exposed to sick and ill patients who may have an infection disease and be very upset. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
