CDL Driver and Maintenance Assistant

Butler County Regional Transit Authority
Hamilton, OH Part Time
POSTED ON 7/25/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 10/22/2026

Part-Time | Maintenance and Infrastructure | Hamilton, Ohio
Schedule: 4 to 5 hours a day, 3 to 5 days a week, mostly weekday daytime
Reports to the Vehicle Maintenance Manager
Benefits: OPERS pension participation and paid time off that accrues with hours worked. This position does not include health insurance.

This is a part-time job for someone who is good with a bus and would rather be moving than sitting.

There is no route here. No fare box, no schedule to keep, and nobody waiting at a stop. What there is instead is a fleet of more than 80 vehicles that constantly needs to be somewhere other than where it is. A bus goes out to the vendor and comes back. A cutaway goes to the body shop. Something has to be at inspection by ten. Somebody has to drive all of it, and that somebody needs a CDL and the kind of hands that return equipment without a new mark on it.

The hours are steady and predictable, which is the whole appeal. Four to five hours a day, three to five days a week, generally weekday daytime, with some flexibility on which days. This is a natural fit for retired operators, semi-retired drivers, and anyone holding a CDL who wants consistent part-time work without a full schedule or the pressure of running service.

What the work looks like

  • Shuttling Authority vehicles, from buses and cutaways down to vans and support vehicles, between our maintenance facility, vendor shops, body shops, dealerships, inspection sites, and other Authority locations.
  • Pre-trip and post-trip inspections on everything you touch, and speaking up immediately when something is not right.
  • Moving and staging vehicles in the yard so the shop, the cleaners, and the morning pull out all work.
  • Fueling, washing, and getting vehicles ready for service.
  • Basic service tasks under the shop's direction: fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, mirrors, interior cleaning.
  • Running parts, supplies, and equipment where they need to go.
  • Logging mileage, fuel, and trip information accurately, and entering it in the maintenance system.
  • General help around the shop when the technicians need an extra set of hands.

What makes someone good at this

Care with equipment, mostly. These are expensive vehicles and they belong to the public. Beyond that, the ability to work on your own without someone standing over you, a clear head about where things need to be and when, and the willingness to tell the shop the truth when you notice something on the way back. Knowing Butler County and the Cincinnati and Dayton road network well enough to get around without fighting your phone helps more than you would think.

Minimum qualifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver License, Class B or higher, with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction
  • Current DOT medical certification, or the ability to get one before you start
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record with no disqualifying violations
  • At least 21 years old
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and to walk, stand, bend, and climb in and out of vehicles through the shift, outdoors, in whatever the weather is doing

Preferred qualifications

  • Time behind the wheel of transit buses, school buses, motorcoaches, or heavy duty trucks
  • Previous work in a maintenance, fleet, or garage environment

Testing and screening

This is a safety sensitive position under Federal Transit Administration rules, so it carries drug and alcohol testing under 49 CFR Part 655, including pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident testing. Employment is also contingent on a background check, motor vehicle record review, and physical examination.
