At Butler-Cohen, Field Engineers are essential to the successful execution of our field work. As entry level personnel assigned to field operations teams, they assist in obtaining, evaluating, and coordinating information needed to construct the project. They operate in strict accordance with the safety, quality, and workmanship expectations that Butler-Cohen values while meeting the expectations for cost, schedule, and accuracy that our clients require.

The key responsibility of our Field Engineers is to support our Superintendents in the day-to-day project activities with an eye toward professional growth and development. There are many tasks which will be performed independently or with limited supervision. Problem solving, diligence, and a strong work ethic are a must for this position and will ultimately be rewarded with additional opportunities

Essential Duties/Responsibilities 

  • Assist in implementation of site safety program as required
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with safety standards, codes, and regulations
  • Assist in maintenance of contract documents and electronic web-based documents
  • Assist in preparation of Daily Construction Reports
  • Review work as it is being placed to ensure it is accurate and within accepted tolerances
  • Review Contract Documents and shop drawings to ensure proper coordination and installation.
  • Inspection of contractor or subcontract operations to ensure compliance with Contract and determine non-compliance where applicable
  • Assist in preparation of project as-built documentation
  • Assist in protection and promotion of company interests in project related matters
  • Communicate with clients to determine needs and explain complex issues
  • Conduct research and studies to develop solutions to on site challenges
  • Manage field activities and implement engineering designs
  • Diagnosing construction or machinery problems
  • Oversee repairs and technical improvements
  • Ensure proper maintenance of onsite equipment
  • Supervise and direct (at Superintendent’s direction) onsite staff and subcontractors 
  • Strict adherence to company safety policies
  • Create and maintain site logistics plan, in coordination with Project Manager
  • Conduct quality inspections, document deficiencies, and manage corrections when required
  • Coordinate site testing and inspection efforts
  • Monitor costs, including labor time and material
  • Prepare and submit Daily Reports including work in-place quantities
  • Attend and participate in project meetings, including subcontractor meetings
  • Other activities, duties, and responsibilities as assigned

Education/Experience Required:

  • 2 years of college in accredited program for Engineering, Construction, or related field
  • 2 years of Building construction, engineering, or equivalent experience, preferred
  • Proficient with computer applications, data entry, and Microsoft suite of applications
  • Basic understanding of project management software and scheduling programs, desired
  • Computer proficient with ability to adapt to new innovations and processes
  • Capable of understanding construction documents including drawings, standards, and specifications
  • Basic knowledge of surveying principles, methods, and equipment.

Skills/Abilities Required:

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and maps.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with AutoCAD, GIS, or survey software.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with QA/QC
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Physical and Working Conditions:

This role is performed in a hybrid indoor/outdoor setting on an active commercial construction site and requires a high level of physical mobility and situational awareness.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to walk the site multiple times per day, including uneven surfaces such as sand, gravel, or compacted dirt.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders to access all areas of the jobsite, including roofs, mezzanines, and spaces above ceilings.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, and standing for extended periods are required to check framing layouts, concrete forms, and detailed fieldwork.
  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work on their feet for most of the workday without the need for extended rest periods.
  • Must be able to visually inspect small details and work elements at close range and at a distance.
  • Must be able to hear and understand verbal instructions and communicate clearly across noisy jobsite environments.
  • Must be physically capable of coordinating in the field with subcontractors, vendors, and inspectors throughout the day

Working Conditions:

  • Work will occur in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Must be comfortable working independently without direct supervision during afternoons, early mornings, or weekends as project needs require.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels, dust, and other airborne particles; appropriate PPE must be worn.

Must be able to safely navigate active construction areas, including heavy equipment, scaffolding, and temporary structures.

Salary : $80,000 - $95,000
