Primary Job Function: 

The Reynoldsburg City Schools ELA Curriculum Specialist works closely with teachers, building principals, and the Department of Leadership and Learning to support high quality literacy instruction across the district. The specialist will be responsible for coordinating district English-Language Arts programs to ensure all students receive appropriate instruction and support. 

 

The following are minimum qualifications for the ELA Curriculum Specialist: 

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of successful classroom teaching that includes reading/literacy instruction.
  • Completion of Ohio’s Science of Reading and/or Ohio’s Dyslexia modules
  • Structured Literacy Certification or willingness to obtain within two years
  • A master’s degree in reading or literacy education, curriculum and instruction, educational administration and leadership, or a related area.  
  • Valid Ohio teaching license and appropriate grade level certification 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in how to improve student learning through the implementation of high-quality evidenced-based English language arts curriculum
  • Experience providing and coaching ELA curriculum implementation
  • Evidence of previously producing professional development materials specific to ELA curriculum implementation 
  • Experience with coaching and consulting skills, including mentoring and providing feedback about instruction to classroom teachers. 
  • Knowledge of how to analyze and use student and adult implementation data to drive instruction. 
  • Experience collaborating with and leading others. 
  • Experience facilitating and interpreting screening measures for identifying students at-risk for reading difficulties. 
  • Collaborates with and supports building principals with implementing a district-wide curriculum.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Works with administrators and teachers to identify educational programming and/or materials needed by students and makes appropriate recommendations to the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.
  • Coordinates the work of department/grade level leadership teams.
  • Stays abreast of updates regarding curricular mandates and policy changes and shares with the team regularly.
  • Oversees, coordinates and leads professional development throughout the school year that aligns with new initiatives, best instructional practices, and staff and curriculum/instruction needs.
  • Coordinates data discussions among various groups, generating data and reports for identified content areas.
  • Ensures that district assessments are accessible to building staff and supports the use of assessment data at the district, building and classroom level.
  • Supports the management of various curricular systems and resources.
  • Administer and interpret the Reading Tiered Fidelity Inventory

 

Leadership

  • Develop and implement a rigorous, standards-aligned ELA curriculum, emphasizing critical reading, writing, speaking, and analytical skills
  • Responsible for providing instructional leadership in the planning, development, and implementation of the district curriculum plan
  • Responsible for participating in the district/school improvement process through goal setting and implementation
  • Analyzes student performance data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement in ELA achievement; collaborate with educators to implement targeted interventions
  • Participates in the creation and design of the district’s curriculum in the area of ELA 
  • Designs and facilitates professional development initiatives to enhance teachers’ pedagogical skills, content knowledge, and strategies for fostering advanced literacy and critical thinking skills
  • Lead and facilitate curriculum and resource adoption process with the guidance and support of the director of curriculum and instruction. 
  • Coordinate and support the administration of standardized assessments related to ELA, ensuring alignment with curriculum objectives
  • Stays informed about current trends, research, and best practices in ELA, integrating this knowledge into curriculum development and instructional improvement

 

 

Communication and Support

  • Establish and maintain communication channels with parents, keeping them informed about the ELA curriculum, literacy development strategies, and ways to support learning at home
  • Collaborates with technology integration staff to leverage educational technology tools and resources for enhancing ELA instruction
  • Collaborate with ELA teachers, special education staff, and EL Teachers to provide guidance on effective instructional strategies, curriculum implementation, and the integration of technology in ELA
  • Works with district academic teams and/ or building principals to support the implementation and development of the district curriculum as needed
  • Monitors student achievement and works with school personnel to develop improvement plans
  • Works with schools to develop and implement reading/ language arts program models that meet and exceed federal & state grant/ regulations
  • Provides training and assistance for school district personnel in data collection and student-related data analysis
  • Conduct regular classroom observations and provide constructive feedback to ELA teachers, promoting a culture of continuous improvement
  • Designs and models effective classroom instruction
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and accessible records for district and state reporting

  • Physical Demands – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to  speak and hear. The employee is required to have dexterity of hands and fingers. The employee is  required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. They may be occasionally required to bend  at the waist, kneel or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision,  and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or  walking at will and must be able to push, pull, lift and carry over 25 pounds on occasion. 
  • Working Conditions – Generally acceptable working environment with limited exposure to  unpleasant conditions. Exposure to such conditions may make the working environment unpleasant or cause discomfort occasionally but has a minor impact on personal safety and/or mental well being. 
  • Driving Requirement – This job description does require driving; however, any employee who  chooses or is asked to drive an RCS vehicle for work related community business must receive  written annual authorization to do so.
