Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Ambulatory Care (Colorectal Surgery Clinic) | Day Shift | 13-Week Contract

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (with possible extension)

Shift:
Day Shift – 5x8 Hours (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
No weekends or on-call required
Float: Rare; within similar or lower acuity units only

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Ambulatory Colorectal Surgery Clinic team for a 13-week contract. The RN will play a key role in providing high-quality outpatient nursing care, assisting with colorectal surgical procedures, patient education, and post-operative management.

This is a great opportunity for an RN with ambulatory, surgical, or procedural clinic experience who is looking to work in a collaborative and teaching-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients in an outpatient surgical clinic setting.
• Assist with colorectal procedures, including:
• Anal manometry
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy
• Rubber band ligation of hemorrhoids
• Ostomy marking and care
• Anal ultrasound
• Botox injection and skin tag removal
• Conduct patient assessments and record vital signs, medical histories, allergies, and medications.
• Perform venipuncture, IV infusions, and intramuscular injections.
• Manage medication reconciliation and patient teaching for ostomy and wound care.
• Coordinate scheduling, insurance verification, and referrals.
• Prepare procedure rooms and maintain aseptic technique.
• Document patient care in Cerner EMR.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams such as Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Pharmacy, and Rapid Response.

• Unit Type: Ambulatory Colorectal Surgery Clinic
• Patient Population: Adults and Geriatrics
• Daily Census: 25–45 visits per day
• Unit Size: 5 rooms
• Procedures Performed: Diagnostic and minor surgical colorectal procedures

Common Diagnoses:

• Hemorrhoids, Anal fissures, Fistulas, and Abscesses
• Rectal bleeding and colorectal malignancies
• Diverticulitis, Ostomy management, and Pilonidal cysts

Work Environment

• Medical Setting: Ambulatory/Outpatient Surgical Clinic (Hospital-based)
• Physical Setting: Outpatient procedural unit
• Physical Demands: Standing, walking, lifting, and assisting during procedures
• Scrub Color: Ceil Blue (not provided)
• Support Services Available: Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Pharmacy, Phlebotomy, Interpretation, Rapid Response, Unit Secretary

Required Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 2 years of recent nursing experience (ambulatory, colorectal, or surgical clinic preferred)
• Charting System: Cerner (required)
• Teaching Hospital Experience: Preferred
• Travel Experience: Not required (first-time travelers welcome)

Education & Licensure

• Education: Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing (ADN or BSN)

License:

• Active DC RN license required (pending license accepted with proof of submission prior to start)

Certifications

Required:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association
• DC State RN License

Preferred:

• ACLS or other specialty certifications related to ambulatory/surgical nursing

Skills Required

Clinical & Technical Skills:

• Venipuncture and IV therapy
• Foley catheter insertion and management
• Aseptic technique and sterile tray setup
• Suture removal and dressing changes
• Oxygen administration and vital sign monitoring
• Specimen collection and labeling
• Pain and health assessment

Administrative & Office Skills:

• Scheduling, insurance verification, and patient referrals
• Chart preparation and documentation
• Telephone triage and follow-up calls
• Medication refills and pharmacy coordination

Specialty Knowledge:

• Colorectal and gastrointestinal disorders
• Post-surgical wound and ostomy management
• Hypertension and cardiac assessment
• Universal precautions and biohazard waste handling
