- Education and Experience:
Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma, high school
certificate of completion, G.E.D. Certificate, or demonstrated progress
toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law and three
years journey-level mechanical maintenance experience.
Graduated from an accredited diesel mechanic school and/or have completed
additional ASE certifications in various areas. Skilled Mechanics will have seven or
more years of experience working on diesel engines and/or school buses.
- Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license.
If individual does not have their KDE State Certified Inspectors credentials, it is
expected for them to complete this training at the first opportunity available.
- Such additional qualifications as the Superintendent or Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
SUPERVISES: N/A
JOB GOALS: Perform repair, maintenance, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and clutches in District vehicles including buses, passenger vehicles, trucks, and ground and maintenance equipment; train, prioritize, plan, assign, and review the work of assigned mechanics and maintenance personnel; prepare and maintain related records.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Trains, prioritizes, plans, assigns, and reviews the work of assigned mechanics and maintenance personnel; prepares and maintains related records.
2. Performs journey-level diagnosis, repair, maintenance and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, rear ends, starters, generators, brakes, clutches, carburetors, electrical assemblies, and other mechanical assemblies.
3. Determines priority of mechanical work to be performed; organizes, lays out, assigns, and reviews work to be performed by mechanics; assigns and reviews work of community service workers, summer helpers and other maintenance personnel as assigned.
- Coordinates with other maintenance personnel for scheduling service and repair of District maintenance vehicles.
- Initiates with vendors and interviews sales people concerning sources and cost of materials, supplies, equipment.
- Operates a microcomputer as required: prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports including equipment, vehicle, tool, and supply inventories, vehicle inspection reports, bus status reports, emission control records, and preventive maintenance reports and schedules for buses vehicles, carts, and engines at District sites as assigned.
7. Inspects buses and other automotive vehicles to assure compliance with health and safety standards and regulations; uses diagnostic equipment to evaluate operation and repair of engines and electrical and automotive systems and equipment.
- Inspects, adjusts, and relines brakes; balances and aligns wheels; changes oil and rotates tires; fits pistons and rings and calibrates engine parts to meet established specifications.
- Performs road tests to evaluate malfunctions, needed repairs or repairs performed.
- Estimates time and material costs needed to repair and maintain engines, parts, and minor body and fender repairs.
- Operates engine and electrical diagnostic equipment, microcomputer, ARC and gas welders, soldering gun, air jacks, fork lift, engine hoists, grinders, steam cleaner, high pressure washer, meters, gauges, hydraulic press, drill press, and a variety of power and hand tools.
- Prepares and maintains records of safety inspections conducted on student transportation vehicles as assigned; maintains records of work performed including hours and materials purchased and used.
- Assists other maintenance personnel as assigned.
- Responsibilities Specific to HCPS Assignment: A) Maintains a current inventory of assigned tools and equipment and takes responsibility for all such tools and equipment. B) Attends assigned training sessions to improve known skills and/or learn new skills.
- Performs such other tasks as may be assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Superintendent.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent and the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
