What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Driver position at Bus Garage?
QUALIFICATIONS: All drivers must have a Social Security Number, have written contract with the Board of Education, pass a check-driving test on a bus, have a High School Diploma or G.E.D., attend drivers’ meetings, and must possess a current commercial driver’s license (CDL).

SUPERVISES: Not Applicable
JOB GOAL: To provide safe and efficient transportation so students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the school district’s curriculum and extracurricular programs.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The bus must leave on time every day. Never leave a stop before the scheduled time.
- In cold weather drivers should get out early to check the bus to see if it will run. Warm up the bus engine in cold weather according to Board policy.
- Each driver MUST complete inspection on his or her bus every time the bus is taken from the
garage or lot. The tire checking is to be done with a hammer, which should be kept in the glove compartment for this purpose and not with toe or heel of shoes. - The driver shall perform the walk around inspection before each trip.
- Drivers MUST STOP THE BUS AT ALL RAILROAD CROSSINGS. This means switch tracks as well as main tracks. When the bus has stopped, the door must be opened. This enables the driver to see and hear better and also to see that the door is not jammed in case the bus stalls on the tracks. Failure to do this will be cause for immediate dismissal.
- Bus drivers shall have annual medical examinations. The medical examination shall include tests for hearing and vision disorders, emotional instability and for serious medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, heart diseases and other chronic or communicable diseases. The examination shall include tests for tuberculosis upon initial employment and positive reactors shall be required to have further evaluations. All medical examinations of the school bus drivers shall be reported on a form prescribed by the State Department of Education and submitted to the local Superintendent.
- No person shall drive a bus unless he/ she is physically or mentally able to operate a school bus safely and satisfactorily. If there is limitation of motion in joints, neck, back, arms, legs, etc., due to injury or disease that would limit the driver’s ability to safely perform the task of driving a school bus, the driver shall be rejected. Any driver taking medication even by prescription shall not be permitted to drive if that medication would affect in any way the driver’s ability to safely drive a school bus.
- Bus Drivers shall have a current driver’s license that is valid in Kentucky. All drivers must possess a current commercial driver’s license with passengers’ endorsement.
- Drivers using alcoholic beverages or drugs while on the job, or having used them when reporting for duty or at other times that affect their driving efficiency, will be dismissed. Prescribed drugs from a physician are exempt when accompanied by a statement from the physician indicating that driving efficiency will not be affected.
- Drivers are expected to keep clean and neat while operating the school buses.
- Drivers are expected to wear appropriate dress while operating the school buses.

- Drivers shall not use tobacco while in the bus or on the school grounds.
- Drivers are expected to support the policies of the Board of Education and help promote the progress of the school system.
- Drivers are expected to follow all rules and directives as assigned by the principals, Director of Transportation and Superintendent.
- Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work day to be determined by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
