Behavior Specialist - Burrillville School Department

TOWN OF BURRILLVILLE Burrillville School Department Position Description Title: Special Education: Behavioral Specialist Supervisor: Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Building Principal Department: Special Education GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Director of Pupil Personnel Services, Principal, designee, or a designated teacher, the Special Education Behavioral Specialist assists in conducting the daily classroom activities and care of students who may have disabilities ranging from mild/moderate to severe/profound that are in the Therapeutic Learning Center Behavioral Program. The Special Education Behavioral Specialist ensures confidentiality in all matters related to staff and student personal information. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. The Behavior Specialist is a professional support position. The Behavior Specialist will collaborate with school staff to develop behavioral interventions for students with disabilities. The Specialist reports to the Director of Special Education but coordinates his/her work with the Special Education Teacher. 2. Under the direction of a teacher, assists students with all phases of activities on an individual and group basis throughout the day. 3. Assists in the transport of students to and from buses to ensure safety and the boarding of the assigned buses. 4. Provides input to the teacher regarding students’ behavior. 5. Assists staff members in supervising students in the classroom, during lunch, and at recess periods to maintain proper orderly conduct and works with teaching staff to resolve behavior problems. 6. Under the direction of a teacher, applies varying methods of behavior management designed to maximize student learning. 7. Possesses the ability to interact effectively with students in individual and group situations. 8. Participates in the design and interpretation of Functional Behavior Analysis (FBA’s) 9. Designs and implements multi-faceted behavior interventions 10. Ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with parents and professionals 11. Understands and works with the various support systems available in the community 12. Understands Special Education regulations including the Least Restrictive Behavior Intervention policy 13. Possesses excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to handle emotionally charged situations. 14. Maintains confidentiality regarding staff and student information. 15. Travels as needed on transportation to and from school with students. 16. Performs other job-related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Minimum of 3 (three) years or training or related experience with behavioral intervention strategies. 2. Successful completion of trainings specific to working with students with Mental Health issues, Special Needs, and/or Behavioral Issues. 3. Oral communication skills at the level required for the position. 4. Proficiency with technology at the level required for the position as well as a willingness to improve skills. 5. Experience with Case Management, including correspondence with outside agencies, parents and school staff. 6. A pleasant manner and positive, professional attitude that facilitates good interaction with children and adults. 7. The ability to lift, assist, and appropriately physically de-escalate and restrain children. 8. Organizational skills that ensure efficiency. 9. Familiarity and experience with either Safety Care or Crisis Intervention and Prevention (CPI) techniques.
